Orange Roll Past Boston College, 101-63
12/12/2020 3:27:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Syracuse (4-1) jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. An impressive shooting display led to a 101-63 route of Boston College (1-5) in the conference opener.
The offensive outburst included a program-record 16 3-pointers, all-five starters in double-figures and the team's first 100+ point effort since Feb. 1, 2017 against NC State. It was also the largest margin of victory over a conference opponent since 'Cuse joined the ACC for the 2013-14 season.
Alan Griffin led the way with 19 points, including a 6-of-9 effort from behind the arc. Joseph Girard III (17), Buddy Boeheim (17), Quincy Guerrier (14) and Marek Dolezaj (10) were the starters in double figures, while Kadary Richmond (12) reached double figures off the bench.
START ME UP
The Orange got off to a 13-5 start that featured two 3-pointers from Boeheim and another 3-ball from Girard. Boston College stayed close until the midway point of the first half, when Syracuse pushed its eight-point margin up to 18 with a 15-5 run. Seven of those points were contributed by Guerrier, while reserve Woody Newton chipped in with a dunk and a 3-pointer.
FILLING IT UP IN BOSTON
Syracuse got hot early and struck often as the Orange shot 58.7-percent from the field on Saturday, the best field goal percentage for the Orange since they shot 59.6-percent against Seattle on 11/16/19.
Much of the damage came from behind the arc, as 'Cuse drained 16-of-31 from deep. The 51.6 percent from 3-point range was the best shooting performance since March of 2017, when they made 15-of-24 (.625 percent).
Griffin (6-of-9), Girard III (5-of-7) and Boeheim (3-of-8) did the bulk of the damage from behind the arc. Griffin's six made field goals tied a career best.
FROM COACH BOEHEIM
"I think the defense was better from the beginning. We did a good job finding shooters. Part of it was that Buddy stabilized the defense as well as the offense. Marek did a great job passing the ball and Joe got to open spaces and when he gets open looks he can make them."
THE SYRACUSE-BOSTON COLLEGE SERIES
With the victory, the Orange improved their series advantage with Boston College to 52-26. Syracuse claimed its fifth straight against BC and has now claimed seven of the last eight meetings.
The two ACC foes are scheduled to meet in Syracuse on February 20. The Eagles are the ninth most familiar foe in Syracuse basketball history.Â
PASSING POPS
Buddy Boeheim has passed his father, Jim Boeheim (745) in scoring at Syracuse with 746 career points. It was Buddy's first game back in the Orange lineup after having to miss the last-two weeks due to COVID-19 contact tracing.
COMFORT IN CONTE
Syracuse's 38-point victory was just the second time the team has defeated a conference foe by 30+ points since coming into the league, joining last year's 34-point victory at Georgia Tech – which was also the team's first league road trip.
Since joining the ACC, Syracuse now has 13 victories over league opponents by 20+ points.
