Syracuse softball is adding to its roster this January with two mid-year transfers. Geana Torres (Louisiana) and Maxine Barnes (USC Upstate) will join the Orange as for the 2021 season and add more depth to the Orange squad.Â
Torres, form Rochester, N.H., began her collegiate career at Missouri where she batted .294 over 39 games. She earned 29 starts including 11 versus SEC opponents, and appeared in every game for Missouri at the 2019 NCAA Regional in Los Angeles. She transferred to Louisiana last spring where she played in 11 games and started five behind the plate. She hit .429 and collected a base hit in five of her 11 appearances.Â

The 5-foot-6 catcher was a four-year standout at Spaulding High School in Rochester, N.H., where she hit .460 with 92 hits, 56 runs, 66 RBI, a .505 on-base percentage and .695 slugging percentage. In 2017, she played for the Puerto Rican Junior National Team at the Women's Softball World Championships where she hit .344 with eight runs scored and three RBI over 29 at bats.
Barnes, a Purcellville, Va., native, joins the Orange after a shortened freshman season at USC Upstate. She started in 22 of the Spartans' 23 games with a .283 batting average including 13 hits, 4 doubles, 1 homerun, 12 RBI's and 7 runs scored.

At Woodgrove High School she helped the Wolverines to three-straight Virginia Class 4A State Championships and a runner-up finish in 2019. She was twice named VHSL 4A All-State First Team (2017, 2018) and earned 2019 Washington Post All-Met First Team honors. She was the 2018 Locosports Softball Player of the Year and earned multiple honors as a catcher and outfielder at the Dullles District and VHSL Regional level. The 5-foot-9 catcher/utility will follow in the footsteps of her grandfather William R. Brehm and uncle, Matthew Brehm, who both attended Syracuse University.Â
The Orange went 10-10 in the shortened 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
