SYRACUSE, N.Y. – A career-high 22 points for Marek Dolezaj was not enough as #9/8 Duke (18-3, 8-2 ACC) defeated Syracuse (13-9, 6-5 ACC), 97-88, in the Carrier Dome Saturday night. The contest was played in front of college basketball's largest crowd of the year -- 31,458.
Blue Devil freshman Vernon Carey paced the visitors with 26 points and 17 rebounds. In addition to Dolezaj, three other Orange players finished the game in double-figures: Elijah Hughes (21), Joseph Girard III (17), and Buddy Boeheim (13).
DUKE GETS IT DONE IN THE DOME
After a 15-point Duke advantage was reduced to five with 3:06 to go in the game, the Blue Devils inflated their lead back to 10 thanks to a 3-point play by freshman guard Cassius Stanley and two free throws from sophomore Tre Jones.
Girard drilled a 3-pointer with 1:37 on the clock to bring the Orange back to within six, but Stanley cashed in another 3-point play on his next offensive possession to give Duke a 91-82 lead, essentially sealing the Blue Devil triumph.
SYRACUSE STARTS WITH A SURGE
The Orange defense forced three turnovers in the first 4:40 of the matchup and the offense knocked down 4-of-7 field goals to go on top, 11-6. Hughes converted three of his first four jumpers for six points and Dolezaj added four of his own, including two makes from the free throw line.
BLUE DEVILS BOUNCE BACK
A field goal from Blue Devil senior forward Javin DeLaurier even the score at 21 at the 7:38 mark of the first half. Six different Duke players contributed to the five-point comeback, DeLaurier leading the way with four points.
The Blue Devils closed the first 20 minutes on a 6-0 scoring run, including a pair of layups made by DeLaurier. Duke went to the locker room with a 40-36 advantage, freshman Vernon Carey Jr. pacing his team with 12 points. Syracuse was led by Hughes and Dolezaj, who each posted 10 points, and the Orange forced eight Blue Devil turnovers. Bourama Sidibe and Quincy Guerrier each pulled down four rebounds in the first half for 'Cuse and Hughes had two emphatic blocks.
Duke grabbed control of the game in the first 8:09 of the second half, outscoring the Orange, 22-11 in that stretch to build a 62-47 cushion. The Blue Devils knocked down nine field goals on 12 tries with three 3-balls, while Syracuse only converted four of 12 attempts from the field, including one 3-pointer. Vernon Carey Jr. was responsible for eight Duke points during the burst, bringing his game total to 20.
