5 Things to Know Ahead of the Binghamton Matchup
2/12/2020 8:17:00 PM | Men's Lacrosse
Syracuse will host Binghamton at 2 p.m. in its second of four-straight in the Dome. Here are five things to know about Saturday's game with the Bearcats.
1. Orange seeking 15th 2-0 start in the Desko Era
Head Coach John Desko has gotten the Orange off on the right foot in 14 of his previous 21 seasons, with Syracuse starting 2-0 or better. 'Cuse is seeking to continue the trend on Saturday vs. the Bearcats.
2. X-Factor Could Be Key Again
The last time these two programs met was in the 2018 season opener, the first game since three-time All-American Ben Williams departed the Orange program. Danny Varello starred in his first action as the Orange's primary faceoff man, winning 15-of-17 restarts in what still stands as his career day.
He and Jakob Phaup have been solid over the last two-plus seasons in tandem and will look to continue the trend against a Binghamton squad that won just three of the 18 faceoffs they took in their season opener.

3. Can the offense do it again?
The Pat March offensive era couldn't have gotten off to much of a better start, with the Orange posting 21 goals and seeing ACC Player of the Week Chase Scanlan (seven goals) and Stephen Rehfuss (eight points) post career afternoons.
Syracuse enters Saturday's game ranked second nationally in scoring offense and tops in the nation in assists and points per game, albeit after just one week of action.
4. Going Streaking
While Chase Scanlan may be new to the Orange, he scored 43 goals last season at Loyola, at least one in all-17 of the Greyhounds games last season. His current streak of 18-straight games with a goal ranks 15th nationally.
Scanlan is the only sophomore with an active goal-scoring streak of 15 games or more, which is the third longest in the ACC behind Notre Dame senior midfielder Bryan Costabile (27) and Virginia junior attackman Matt Moore (22 games).
5. Missing Mellen
Head Coach John Desko ruled All-American defenseman Nick Mellen out for Saturday's game, declaring him week-to-week with a lower body injury.
The good news for the Orange is they've got a depth of experience and flexibility on the defensive side of the field. In the opener Nick DiPietro and Brett Kennedy started alongside Mellen. Grant Murphy – who started in place of Tyson Bomberry last year when he missed a stretch of time with a lower-body injury last year – entered the game in replace of Mellen on Saturday. Other options for playing time could be Jerry Staats, who was an All-American at OCC in 2018 before missing all of last year due to injury or even bumping down Andrew Helmer, who is a versatile defensive option that played at LSM vs. Colgate.
