MIAMI, FLA. – Syracuse (1-1) came out on both ends of 1-run contests Saturday at the Felsberg Invitational, with a walk-off win against Penn State (3-1), 5-4, and a nail-biter of a loss to Florida International (2-1), 2-1. Gabby Teran paced the Orange offensive attack with three hits and three runs batted-in on seven trips to the plate.
Â
Senior ace Alexa Romero pitched the entirety of the first game against the Nittany Lions, striking out four batters and allowing only four hits. Freshman Kaia Oliver made her Syracuse debut in the second tilt of the day, giving up six hits and two earned runs in six innings.
Â
Seven different Orange players recorded hits in the two games, Teran and Alex Acevedo the only hitters with multiple. Freshman Rebecca Clyde posted her first collegiate hit in the second game. Clyde and Jude Padilla each tallied their first RBIs in college in the victory over the Nittany Lions.
Â
GAME 1 vs. PENN STATE
After Alexa Romero sent the Nittany Lions down in order in the first inning, Penn State's first two batters reached base in the second. A Dani Fey triple brought those runners in, and Ally Kurland hit a single to bring her across and give the Nittany Lions a 3-0 lead. Penn State added an unearned run in the top of the third on a Syracuse error.
Â
The Orange bats were quiet in the early part of the contest, not registering a hit until the fourth inning.Teran's long homerun over the left field fence got 'Cuse on the board in the bottom of the fourth. Jaime Barta notched her first hit in Orange in the bottom of the fifth with a bunt single and Teran brought her across with a triple to cut the Nittany Lion lead to 4-2.
Â
Alex Acevedo hit a double in the right-centerfield gap and Lailoni Mayfield followed by extending her single up the middle into a double with one down in the bottom of the sixth. Neli Casares-Maher worked a walk to load the bases and Jude Padilla earned her first collegiate run batted-in with a walk of her own. Classmate Rebecca Clyde took another walk in the next at-bat to tie the score at four.
Â
It took an extra frame, but a passed ball with Toni Martin on second base allowed her to advance to third, and an errant Penn State throw brought her in to clinch the win for the Orange, 5-4, in the bottom of the eighth.
Â
GAME 2 vs. FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL
Offense proved to be hard to come by in the second game of the doubleheader against the host Panthers. Oliver was steady in her debut, not surrendering a run until the fourth inning. Florida International put two on the board in the bottom of the fourth, stringing together three hits in the inning and stealing a pair of bases.
Â
Syracuse responded in the top of the sixth, as Teran singled to right field to end a 16-pitch at-bat and bring Clyde home, who led off the inning with a triple. This would be the final mark of offense in the game, as the Panthers held on for the 2-1 victory.
