GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Syracuse junior guard Howard Washington is the recipient of the 14th annual Bob Bradley Spirit and Courage Award from the Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association (ACSMA) and the Atlantic Coast Conference.
As he prepares to take the floor for the Orange in this week's New York Life ACC Tournament, Washington continues a collegiate career that has been a study in perseverance.
The Buffalo, New York, native played in 18 of Syracuse's first 21 games as a freshman in 2017-18, but a torn ACL in late January ended his season.
He underwent knee surgery and was cleared to resume basketball activities prior to the start of his sophomore year. On September 28, 2018, Washington suffered a stroke while walking across campus. Despite having two blood clots removed from his brain and requiring surgery to repair a hole in his heart, Washington returned to the basketball court and appeared in three games before deciding to take a medical redshirt year.
Yet another knee injury set Washington back this past December, but he again worked his way back into the Orange's backcourt rotation. He enters the ACC Tournament having appeared in 19 games.
Washington is enrolled in the David B. Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamic at Syracuse and is majoring in human development and family science.
"Howard Washington has faced a number of health challenges, starting with a serious knee injury, during his time at Syracuse," said head coach Jim Boeheim. "He has faced each one courageously, all the while continuing to be a major contributor to our basketball program and Syracuse University. He is very deserving of this recognition."
The Bradley Award will be presented before Syracuse's second-round game at the New York Life ACC Tournament in Greensboro on Wednesday.
A joint venture of the ACC and ACSMA, the Bradley Award is given annually in memory of Bob Bradley, the Hall of Fame sports information director at Clemson University whose positive attitude inspired all who knew him as he battled cancer. The award goes to an ACC student-athlete, coach, administrator, or other personnel in men's or women's basketball who has overcome significant hardship to contribute to his or her team, or to society as a whole.
Washington is the first man or woman from Syracuse to receive the Bradley Award.
