SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The 2020 Syracuse softball roster will remain intact in 2021, as seniors Toni Martin and Alexa Romero both announced that they will return to the team for a fifth year.
The announcement comes after the NCAA's ruling that spring sport student-athletes could retain their eligibility from 2020 after their seasons were cancelled due to COVID-19.
Romero will enter her fifth season ranked in the top-10 in 12 different Orange career pitching records and eight different single season pitching records. The Aurora, Colorado native ranks third in Syracuse history with 46 career wins and 12 shutouts, and ranks second with 661 strikeouts. She was tabbed to the All-ACC Freshman Team in 2017 after tossing six shutouts and holding her opponents to a .215 average. Romero earned All-ACC Second Team honors in 2018 after posting a 1.73 earned-run average and limiting opponents to a .141 batting average, a single season Orange record. She appeared in 14 out of 20 games in 2020, starting 10 of them and recording a 4-4 record with 66 punchouts in 63 innings.
Martin started all 20 contests in the outfield in the shortened 2020 season. She hit for a .240 average with a home run, 12 runs batted-in and five doubles while not making any errors in the field. Martin has appeared in 157 games in her career, making 123 starts and totaling 63 RBIs with a .435 slugging percentage. Her six career triples are tied for seventh in Syracuse history.
