Catch The Replay Of The 2003 Title Game Watch Party
4/5/2020 11:17:00 AM | Men's Basketball
Syracuse basketball fans can watch a replay of the April 4 Facebook Live "virtual watch party" that featured in-game commentary during a telecast of the 2003 NCAA Championship Game with Kansas. The Orange won the program's first national crown that season, defeating the Jayhawks, 81-78.
The watch party featured Hall of Fame coach Jim Boeheim, who was in his 27th season at the Syracuse helm in 2002-03. Members of his staff -- specifically assistant coaches Mike Hopkins and Troy Weaver -- participated as well. Hopkins is now the head coach at Washington while Weaver, who has enjoyed a successful front-office career in the NBA, is with the Oklahoma City Thunder.
The 2003 roster was well represented in the gathering. All-American and Final Four MVP Carmelo Anthony checked in from Portland, Oregon, where he is a member of the Portland Trail Blazers. He was joined by fellow first-stringers Gerry McNamara, Kueth Duany, Craig Forth and Hakim Warrick. Josh Pace, a key reserve that season, Matt Gorman, and walk-on Andrew Kouwe logged in as well.
Â
Current Voice of the Orange Matt Park '97 hosted the watch party. Park was the color analyst on the Syracuse radio network during the championship season. He welcomed his play-by-play partner from the title campaign, Mark Johnson, to get his recollections of the matchup. Other prominent Syracuse media members -- Mike Tirico (NBC Sports), Pete Thamel (Yahoo Sports), Adam Schein (CBS Sports Network, Sirius XM) and Andrew Catalon (CBS) -- also visited the virtual room. Dave McMenamin, who was a student manager with the Syracuse basketball program and is currently an NBA reporter from ESPN, contributed his recollections.
The Facebook Live session lasted approximately two hours.
Syracuse finished the 2002-03 season with a 30-5 record.
