Freshman short-stick defensive midfielder Brandon Aviles drew praise from the Syracuse coaching staff for how he played in the first five games of the season for the No. 1 Syracuse lacrosse team, now he earned some national honors.
Aviles was named a freshman All-American by College Crosse on Tuesday. He caused three turnovers and collected 12 ground balls in five games. Aviles earned second team honors, with College Crosse selecting just one SSDM per squad.
A Seatauket, N.Y. native from perennial power Ward Melville, Aviles played three games as one of the top pair at the position, filling in for injured Dami Oladunmoye in the first two contests and Peter Dearth in the Johns Hopkins game.
Syracuse had nine players earn All-America honors from Inside Lacrosse last week, the most of any program in the nation. 'Cuse finished the year 5-0 after the COVID-19 pandemic shut down spring sports and was ranked atop all national polls.
