Tewaaraton Award finalists Alyssa Murray and Kayla Treanor combined for 10 goals and 16 points to lead Syracuse to a 16-8 victory against Virginia in the NCAA Tournament semifinals on May 23, 2014. The win sent the Orange to the national championship game for the second time in three years.
The trip to the title game continued the best season in school history. Syracuse came into the Final Four with a 20-2 record. The Orange and Cavaliers met earlier in the season in Charlottesville, a game Syracuse won,18-14.
The 'Cuse controlled the game from the opening draw as Treanor scored 55 seconds into the contest. She then assisted on goals by Kailah Kempney and Murray to give the Orange a 3-0 lead. Syracuse continued to extend the advantage and took a 9-3 lead into the locker room at halftime. The second half featured more Orange offense and Devon Collins' goal with 3:16 remaining gave Syracuse its largest lead of the day at 16-6. The Cavaliers scored twice in the last two minutes for the 16-8 final.
It was a historic night for both Murray and Treanor. Murray scored six goals, the most for a Syracuse player in an NCAA Tournament game, while Treanor had four, giving her a single-season school record total of 77. She finished with 79 goals in 2014, which still stands as the single-season school record.
The squad finished the year with a 21-3 record, setting the program record for most wins in a season.
