Senior goalkeeper Lysianne Proulx tied a career-high effort with 10 saves but Pittsburgh (3-0, 1-0 ACC) posted two second-half goals to defeat Syracuse (0-1, 0-1 ACC).
It was the 25th match between longtime conference rivals Syracuse and Pittsburgh. The Panthers are the most familiar foe in Orange program history.
Pitt Wins Its Home Opener
The Panthers tallied twice in the second half to claim the triumph. Emily Yaple scored first, following Amanda West's shot off the goal post. West then extended the advantage, scoring on a penalty kick at the 75:21 mark.
Pittsburgh outshot the Orange, 27-4, and had eight corners to Syracuse's three.
Proulx Equals Best Effort
Proulx made a number of stellar stops in posting 10 saves. The saves equaled her collegiate-best showing, tying the total she had at Auburn last September.
'Cuse Chances
Syracuse's best opportunity came in the second half when, following a corner kick, junior Jenna Tivnan rang her attempt off the Pittsburgh crossbar.
Coach Adams Comments
"It was an unfortunate result, but it felt so good to be back on the field tonight," Adams said. "I thought we had some first game jitters, especially with so many newcomers. Pitt did a great job capitalizing on our mistakes.
"We will continue to work hard and prepare for our upcoming matches in two weeks."
First Time 'Cuse First Stringers
The Syracuse starting 11 featured three players making their initial starts in an Orange uniform: graduate student Olivia Erlbeck, junior Telly Vunipola and freshman Lindsey Brick. Erlbeck transferred from Duke and Vunipola enrolled at Syracuse after beginning her collegiate career at Louisiana.
Syracuse In Season Openers
The Orange program's record in season openers slipped to 13-8-4. The pairing with Pitt marked the first time Syracuse had opened with a conference foe.
A Moment For Social Justice
Syracuse wore warm-up jerseys with the words "I Can't Breathe" on them.
Both teams observed a moment of silence before the game and the Syracuse roster kneeled in solidarity with the ongoing social-justice movement.
The following ACC Unity Statement was read over the public address prior to the game:
"We are committed to seeing each other as equals and treating each other with respect and dignity at all times; recognizing that our differences don't divide us, but they make us stronger."
Next Game
Syracuse is scheduled to play at Louisville on Thursday, October 1 at 7:00 p.m. The game will be available on ACCN Extra.
Syracuse University Athletics remains committed to doing everything it can to support and protect the health, safety and well-being of our student-athletes, our staff and the campus and Syracuse communities. All decisions will be science-based and informed by public health and guidance as provided by county, state and public health officials. If fans are permitted to attend games – in some capacity – Syracuse Athletics will announce plans for spectators to secure admission to the events. Fans will be required to sit in their socially-distanced seat locations and wear a face covering.
