Three Orange Named 2020-21 Captains

Syracuse University junior outside hitter Polina Shemanova, sophomore middle blocker Abby Casiano and senior outside hitter Yuliia Yastrub will serve as the 2020-21 Orange volleyball captains.
"No question that Polina deserves the captaincy again," said Head Coach Leonid Yelin. "She's a big-time player. Polina is going to keep the team going by scoring. For this season we all agreed to add Abby and Yuliia as captains. Whenever we're in the gym, they give everything they have. They are always the most positive people off the floor. They are the emotional leaders."
Shemanova will serve as a captain for the second-consecutive season. The St. Petersburg, Russia- native set a Syracuse sophomore-record with 485 kills and ranked sixth nationally with 5.16 kills per set. Shemanova has earned ACC Academic Honor Roll recognition twice.
Casiano, a 2019-20 ACC Academic Honor Roll honoree, led the Orange in blocks (77) in 2019-20, including a career-best nine in a 3-2 Orange victory against Boston College.
Yastrub ranked second on the team in blocks (65) and third in aces (16) and notched 142 digs last season. In 2018, she tallied a career-high 14 kills against Duke. She is a two-time ACC Academic Honor Roll selection.
The 2020-21 Orange open the season on Friday, September 25th against Pittsburgh at 5 pm in the Women's Building. The match will be televised on ESPNU.
