Syracuse senior guard Buddy Boeheim has been named to the initial watch list for the 2022 Jerry West Award. The group includes 20 players.
THE JERRY WEST AWARD
The award is named for Jerry West, the 1959 NCAA Final Four Most Valuable Player and a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. The Award, now in its eight year, recognizes the top shooting guards in Division I men's basketball. West starred at West Virginia before embarking on a professional career with the Los Angeles Lakers. He was named to the NBA's 50th Anniversary All-Time Team, which was selected in 1996.
BOEHEIM EARNS AWARD WATCH LIST SPOT
Boeheim is Syracuse's top returning scorer from a season ago. He averaged 17.8 points per game and shot .383 from the 3-point line (77-of-201). He was even more impressive in five ACC Tournament and NCAA Tournament contests. Boeheim averaged 25.0 points in the postseason.
He was selected as a preseason first-team All-ACC pick in balloting of media who cover the league. The son of Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim, Buddy is joined on the Syracuse roster by his older brother Jimmy, this winter.
FAN VOTING
College basketball fans will have the opportunity to vote on the West Award. An updated top 10 watch list will be announced in January, and narrowed to a top 5 in February. The five finalists will be presented to Jerry West and the other members of the Hall of Fame's selection committee, and a winner will be selected.
PREVIOUS WEST AWARD WINNERS
The prestigious West Award has previously been presented to the following: D'Angelo Russell, Ohio State (2015); Buddy Hield, Oklahoma (2016);Â Malik Monk, Kentucky (2017); Carson Edwards, Purdue (2018); RJ Barrett, Duke (2019); Myles Powell, Seton Hall (2020); and Chris Duarte, Oregon (2021).
BASKETBALL HALL OF FAME ANNUAL AWARDS
The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame coordinates a "Men's Starting Five" group of awards. In addition to the honor named after West, the awards include: the Julius Erving Small Forward Award; the Karl Malone Power Forward Award, the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center Award, and the Bob Cousy Point Guard Award.
"As we enter our eighth year of the Naismith Starting Five, we're excited as ever to watch some of the best collegiate student-athletes in the country compete at a very high level," said John L. Doleva, President and CEO of the Basketball Hall of Fame. "It's a tremendous honor to be recognized on a preseason watch list. Each of the young men nominated for this honor has undoubtedly worked extremely hard to be in this position and should feel an immense sense of pride in their achievements. That being said, a player can be added to the watch list at any point in the season, so Mr. West and our committee are eager to evaluate talent as we return to on-court action in the coming weeks."
