The Syracuse men's basketball program conducted its annual local media day on Friday, Oct. 22, in the Carmelo K. Anthony Basketball Center.
The event opened with question and answer session for the media with head coach Jim Boeheim. The second winningest coach in the Division I ranks, Boeheim is in his 46th season at the helm of his alma mater.Â
The rest of the team was also included in interviews. The 2021-22 edition of the Orange features two returning starters -- guards Buddy Boeheim, a senior, and junior Joseph Girard III. Boeheim led the team in scoring a season ago and has been placed on the preseason watch list for the 2022 Jerry West Shooting Guard Award. Boeheim and Girard, each a 3-point shooting threat, are expected to open their third consecutive campaign as Syracuse's starting backup.
Syracuse has three players in the mix for playing time at the center position. Bourama Sidibe, who missed most of last season with a knee injury, is back for a graduate season. Junior Jesse Edward showed dramatic improvement during Syracuse's 2021 postseason run to the NCAA Tournament's Sweet 16. Sophomore Frank Anselem is pushing for court action as well.
The media interacted with four key newcomers, including three transfers. Graduate student Jimmy Boeheim, a 6-8 forward, transferred to Syracuse after earning his undergraduate degree at Cornell. Senior Cole Swider, a 6-9 forward, played three seasons at Villanova before joining the Orange program. Guard Symir Torrence, who was a scholastic standout in Syracuse before playing two years at Marquette, should bolster the Orange backcourt.
Redshirt sophomore John Bol Ajak and sophomore Chaz Owens are two other scholarship forwards vying for playing time.
