SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse took #13 Georgia Tech to four sets on Friday night at the Women's Building, losing to the Yellow Jackets 3-1. Orange senior Elena Karakasi led the offense with a season-high 48 assists, setting up junior Marina Markova, who had 19 kills, and senior Polina Shemanova, who added 15.
"I think we played a lot better tonight," said head coach Leonid Yelin. "I am very eager to see how we play Sunday. We have been down recently, but you look at the stat sheet and you will see that the team played well against a very strong Georgia Tech team. Obviously we had hoped to win, but the energy was very high and the team kept their heads up. I am hoping we can carry this energy into the Clemson match."
The Orange (14-7 overall, 3-6 ACC) won the first set by scoring five of the final eight points for a 25-23 victory. Shemanova and Markova each had four kills and Karakasi had 13 assists. Georgia Tech (16-3, 7-2) took the second set by opening up an early 15-9 lead that it maintained for the 25-17 win.
In the third set, the Yellow Jackets opened a 12-6 advantage before Syracuse rallied to take the lead, 17-16, with an 11-4 run. GT scored nine of the next 13 points to win the set, 25-21. Markova had nine kills and Karakasi had 14 assists in the set.
Trailing the match, 2-1, the Orange battled back-and-forth early in the fourth set until the Yellow Jackets used a 10-6 run to open up a 20-15 lead en route to win the set, 25-19, and the match, 3-1.
Sophomore Lauren Hogan had 15 digs, junior Izzy Plummer added five blocks, and junior Abby Casiano had eight kills. Karakasi's season-high 48 kills matched her output against South Alabama earlier in the season. Markova added four blocks.
