Orange Edged By Hokies
10/28/2021 10:13:00 PM | Women's Soccer
Senior Meghan Root scored to ignite a second-half rally but the Orange comeback fell short in an eventual loss to Virginia Tech, 2-1, at the SU Soccer Stadium on Thursday night.
Syracuse (4-12-1, 0-10 ACC) completed its season while Virginia Tech (11-5-2, 5-3-2) kept its postseason hopes alive with the road triumph.
ROOT-LED RALLY
With the Orange trailing in the second half, 2-0, Root put Syracuse back in reach with a goal created by extra effort. Root intercepted a potential clearing attempt by Virginia Tech goalkeeper Alia Skinner, corralled the loose ball, and drove it into the open net at the 56:55 mark of the contest.
Both teams had opportunities over the remainder of the second half before the game was decided.
VINTAGE EFFORT FROM PROULX
Senior Lysianne Proulx closed out her Syracuse tenure with a 10-save performance reminiscent of many of her outings in goal for the Orange. She finishes her collegiate career ranked fourth in career saves at Syracuse.
HOKIESÂ STRIKE FIRST, AND SECOND
Visiting Virginia Tech opened the scoring 20 minutes into the contest on a goal from Emmalee McCarter that was assisted by Emily Gray. Fifteen minutes later the Hokies struck again, this time on a goal by Sophie Maltese. Tori Powell picked up the assist.Â
