Trio selected to First Team
Eight Syracuse players earned All-ACC honors – including a trio of first team award winners – on Tuesday morning at the conclusion of the 2021 ACC football season. Five of whom have eligibility remaining to return for 2022.
Record-breaking running back Sean Tucker led the way with an All-ACC First Team selection at running back. He garnered the most votes of any player offensively at their respective position. He also earned a separate selection as an honorable mention at the all-purpose position.
Cody Roscoe was also a first team honoree after a breakout redshirt senior campaign, and Mikel Jones earned a first team selection at linebacker.
Freshman corner Duce Chestnut was honored with All-ACC Third Team recognition, while Matthew Bergeron, Airon Servais, Josh Black and Garrett Williams picked up honorable mention honors.
Tucker capped an incredible second season at SU as the program's new single-season rushing leader (1,496). He finished the regular season ranked fourth nationally in the category, while also sixth nationally in all-purpose yards per game (145.9), despite only collecting his yards via rushing and receiving. He finished the year with 14 total touchdowns, a program record nine 100-yard games and a program record seven consecutive 100-yard games. He also became the first player in program history to have 100+ yards rushing and receiving in the same game vs. UAlbany. A semifinalist for both the Maxwell and Doak Walker Awards, Tucker heads into 2022 as one of the nation's premier players.
Jones was the Orange's defensive captain this season, finishing the year with 110 tackles, which was second in the ACC. He led the conference with 60 solo tackles. He also added 13 tackles for loss, which was second in the ACC among linebackers and four sacks. He had six games with 10-or-more tackles and was named to the Butkus Award Watch List.
Roscoe's 8.5 sacks this season was third in the ACC and his 12.5 tackles for loss was seventh in the conference. He also led all Orange defensive linemen with 46 tackles and had five quarterback hurries.
Chestnut finished the season with the second-most passes defended in the ACC. His three interceptions led all Syracuse players, which he complimented with eight pass breakups. He ranked second to only Louisville's Kei'Trel Clark in the category.
His counterpart Garrett Williams was third in the conference in passes defended, but led the league in pass breakups with 10. Williams missed a pair of games due to injury, but had five tackles for loss and was the team's leading tackler out of the secondary (52.0) in his 10 games played.
Bergeron was the only Syracuse offensive lineman to start all-12 games at the same position this season, anchoring the left side of the line that saw three different starting guards next to him. Still, Syracuse managed to average four yards per carry off the left tackle position, which ranked atop the ACC. He graded out as Syracuse's top offensive lineman this season.
Servais is the FBS' most-consistent starter, concluding his collegiate career with 60-straight starts. He played both tackle spots and center in his career, and played the last-10 games of 2021 at center. He was the other lineman to start every game along with Bergeron. Despite a rotating cast of seven different starting offensive line combinations around him, he and the line managed to pave the way for a historic rushing attack that saw Sean Tucker break the program record for rushing yards in a single season, and Garrett Shrader post the second-most rushing yards by a quarterback in a single season. Both of which were the most at their respective position by an SU player in 42 years.
Black started every game on the Orange defensive line this season, finishing the year with 35 tackles, six tackles for loss and 0.5 sacks. He helped the Orange defense post its lowest total defense number in 11 years, holding opponents to 330 yards per game.
Tucker, Jones, Chestnut, Williams and Bergeron are all underclassmen, providing a strong core of All-ACC returners who can return for the 2022 season.
