Syracuse (6-5) hosts long-time rival Cornell (8-2) in the second of three games this week on Wednesday, Dec. 29 at 7 p.m. in the Dome.
SETTING THE STAGE
The Orange defeated Brown last night 93-62 in their first game back on the court in two weeks. Syracuse never trailed during the contest despite Brown's offense tightening the gap to 38-32 at the end of the first half. The Orange responded with a 23-6 run in the opening eight minutes of the second half, giving them a 61-38 lead that the Bears could not recover from.
The Big Red hit the hardwood after a month away due to COVID protocols. They lost their most recent game, 93-60, to Virginia Tech on Dec. 8. after beginning the season with their best start in 54 years. Prior to the loss to the Hokies, Cornell was off to an 8-1 campaign beginning..
THE SYRACUSE-CORNELL SERIES
Wednesday marks the 126th meeting of the two Central New York teams. The Orange have a 94-31 advantage in the all-time series that dates back to the 1900-01 campaign. Syracuse has won the last 40 games in the series, a streak which was begun in 1968. In the most recent contest, Syracuse defeated Cornell, 72-53, on November 20, 2019.
BOEHEIMSÂ ARE SETTLED IN
Buddy Boeheim led the Orange offense with a season- and game-high 28 points against Brown. The national player of the year candidate has scored in double-digit points in nine of the 11 contests this season and is averaging 18.5 ppg.Â
Jimmy Boeheim, Syracuse's third leading scorer this year, gets a different look at the Orange-Big Red rivalry this winter. He started his collegiate career at Cornell and was on the opposite side in three contests against the club his father coached. This year Jimmy will take the court with Syracuse.
BIG RED OFFENSE RANKS SECOND
Cornell brings the nation's second-ranked offense (88.1 ppg.) into the matchup with Syracuse. The Big Red attack includes an outside-shooting arsenal that has the program ninth in Division I 3-point average (11.0).
Sophomore forward Keller Boothby was named Ivy League Rookie of the Week on Dec. 6 after Cornell's last full week of competition. Boothby averaged 16.0 points and 5.5 rebounds in the two contests against Coppin State and Keuka. He is shooting 30-51 (.588) from the field and 27-47 (.574) from beyond the arc this season. Jordan Jones is Cornell's top scorer, averaging 12.7 points per contest.
