
Markova and Shemanova Earn AVCA All-Region Honors

Junior Marina Markova and senior Polina Shemanova are 2021 AVCA East All-Region selections. The honor recognizes performance during the season, including a focus on statistics recorded against the top-50 and top-100 teams in country. Both student-athletes earned All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors for the 2021 season, as well.
Markova led the ACC and 12th nationally with 492 kills. She ranked second in the ACC in kills per set (4.51), attacks (1,122) and attacks per set (10.29). Markova closed the season with a .309 hitting percentage overall, and a .298 and .285 hitting percentage versus top-100 and top-50 programs. She was a two-time co-ACC Player of the Week, including after earning tournament MVP at the Yale Invitational and following a career-weekend in Florida, where she recorded 33 kills against Florida State. The 33 kills are the third-highest single match total in Syracuse history.
Shemanova ranked fourth in conference in kills (421) and kills per set (3.86), and eighth in the ACC in digs (373). Shemanova recorded 17 of her 36 aces this season against top-100 opponents and tallied 22 assists versus top-50 opponents. She was named tournament MVP at the Hail State Invitational.
'Cuse finished 17-13 with an RPI of 41. Syracuse faced 20 top-100 teams this year, compiling a 7-13 record in those matches and was 2-10 against top-50 opponents. The Orange were fourth in conference in blocks (269), and sixth in kills (1,477) and assists (1,351). The ACC sent a record-tying six teams to the NCAA Tournament this season, including #1 overall seed Louisville, #3 overall seed Pittsburgh, #8 overall seed Georgia Tech, in addition to Miami, Florida State and North Carolina.
