TBT, Boeheim's Army, Return To Syracuse In 2022
12/8/2021 11:53:00 AM | Men's Basketball
The Basketball Tournament (TBT), a 64-team, $1 million winner-take-all event televised live on the ESPN networks, today announced that it would be bringing one of its 2022 regionals to Syracuse in partnership with the Jim and Juli Boeheim Foundation. Boeheim's Army, the Syracuse alumni team and defending TBT champion, will serve as the featured squad for the Syracuse Regional, to be played at SRC Arena July 22-25.
Â
"Our entire community has been energized each summer by Boeheim's Army and the TBT," Hall of Fame Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim said. "On behalf of the Boeheim Foundation, we are thrilled to partner with the TBT on the regional in Syracuse.
Â
Boeheim's Army, who has competed in the event since 2015, won their first TBT championship in 2021. Led by Syracuse alums Tyler Lydon, Chris McCullough, and Malachi Richardson, Boeheim's Army defeated Team 23 in TBT's championship game in Dayton, Ohio in August. Keifer Sykes' game-winning three in the Elam Ending gave Boeheim's Army the title and the $1 million grand prize.
Â
Boeheim's Army previously hosted a regional at SRC Arena in 2019, and advanced to the Syracuse Regional finals in front of a sold-out crowd.
Â
"Myself and the rest of Boeheim's Army are extremely excited to be returning to Syracuse this summer," said Boeheim's Army general manager Kevin Belbey. "Syracuse fans have followed us no matter where we played, but to be able to play back at home and do it as the defending champions will make this summer all the more special. We're excited for Cuse nation to see what we have in store for 2022."
Â
"As the reigning TBT champions, Boeheim's Army earned the right to begin its title defense in its hometown," said TBT founder and CEO Jon Mugar. "We loved the atmosphere in SRC Arena back in 2019 and we're looking forward to bringing it back there in partnership with the Boeheim Foundation next summer. Syracuse fans have supported TBT since 2015 and their passion for orange continually amazes us."
Â
"The Syracuse community is thrilled to welcome back The Basketball Tournament, as the 2021 champions, Boeheim's Army, looks to defend its title starting in its hometown," said Visit Syracuse president Danny Liedka. "We look forward to once again hosting this exciting and successful event and know that Syracuse fans near and far will come out to support Boeheim's Army in 2022. We invite alumni and fans everywhere to come back to town for a game, support the defending champions and rediscover the Syracuse area this summer!"
Â
Members of Boeheim's Army's 2022 roster will be revealed in the upcoming weeks.
Â
Alongside Boeheim's Army, seven other teams will compete in the Syracuse Regional, with all games being broadcast live across the ESPN networks. First-round games at SRC Arena will begin Friday, July 22. The remaining four teams will compete in the Regional Semifinals Saturday, July 23, and the Regional Championship will be played Monday, July 25.
Â
One team from each regional will advance to TBT's quarterfinals. The winner of the Omaha Regional will play the winner of the Wichita Regional in Wichita, Kansas on Thursday, July 28, while the remaining six quarterfinalists will play in Dayton, Ohio July 29-30. The semifinals and championship game will also be played in Dayton on July 31 and August 2, respectively.
Â
In addition to featuring the highest-stakes format in the world, TBT has become known as a trendsetter in basketball circles. Its trademark, post-game bracket celebration has grown into a mainstay in the NCAA Tournament each year. The NBA has adopted an Elam Ending-inspired finish to their All-Star Game for the past two years as well. Multiple leagues across the world are also utilizing TBT's Elam Ending as an alternative way to complete basketball games.
Â
TBT's registration period for teams interested in competing in any of its eight regional locations will run from April 1- June 15. The 64-team field and TBT bracket will be released in late June.
