ATLANTA, Ga. - A 31-point, 16-rebound double-double from Moses Wright propelled Georgia Tech (13-8, 9-6) to an 84-77 victory against Syracuse (13-8, 7-7) on Saturday afternoon at McCamish Pavilion.
HOW THE GAME WAS DECIDED
The Yellow Jackets held a one-point advantage with 13:05 to play before a 23-10 scoring stretch ballooned the Tech lead to 75-61 with 4:35 remaining in the contest. Wright provided 13 points during the stretch.
Alan Griffin led the Orange with 26 points, 20 of which came in the first half. He finished two points shy of his career-high 28 points, which came at Pittsburgh on January 16. Jesse Edwards grabbed a career-best eight boards and scored seven points to tie his season high.
Â
FROM COACH BOEHEIM
"Alan (Griffin) kept us in there early by making some tough shots," said Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim, "but they attacked us inside with (Jordan) Usher and (Moses) Wright. Usher got way too many points inside. We didn't do a good enough job defensively in there."
Â
GEORGIA TECH ON TOP EARLY
The Ramblin' Wreck rolled out to an 8-0 lead in the game's first minute with Wright and Jose Alvarado contributing four points apiece. The Orange scored their first points of the game on a Quincy Guerrier put back before Griffin tallied Syracuse's next 12 points over a six-minute stretch. Georgia Tech pulled out to a 21-14 lead with 12 minutes remaining in the opening stanza.
Â
ORANGE ANSWER BACK
The Yellow Jackets extended their lead to 13 with six unanswered points, but the Orange offense erupted with 11 straight points, including eight-in-a-row from Griffin, to cut the deficit to two, 29-27, with 4:38 remaining in the half.
A Georgia Tech layup halted the Orange scoring stretch, but Joseph Girard III tallied back-to-back two-point field goals to tie the game at 31. After Khalid Moore buried a 3-pointer to put the Ramblin' Wreck back on top, the 'Cuse closed the half on an 8-0 run that included four points from Girard III, to claim a 39-34 lead at the break.
Â
YELLOW JACKETS BUZZ BACK
The Ramblin' Wreck regained the lead with a 7-2 scoring run to open the second stanza before Syracuse edged ahead with a 6-2 stretch of its own to make the Orange advantage 47-44 with four minutes gone in the frame.
A layup from Griffin extended the Syracuse lead to four before the Yellow Jacket offense swarmed for seven unanswered points to pull ahead, 52-49, with 13:22 remaining. Edwards trimmed the margin to one with a layup, but an 11-2 Georgia Tech scoring stretch increased the Tech advantage to 10, 63-53, with 8:05 left on the clock.
Â
TECH TAKES CONTROL
Back-to-back slams by Edwards cut the Yellow Jacket lead to six until Wright chipped in four-straight points to push the Tech advantage to 10. Syracuse answered back with a pair of free throws from Buddy Boeheim and a layup from Marek Dolezaj, but the Ramblin' Wreck rolled for eight unanswered points to extend the lead to 75-61 with 4:35 to play.
The Orange outscored the Yellow Jackets 16-9 over the remainder of the contest but were unable to overcome the deficit as Georgia Tech secured an 84-77 victory.
