Syracuse Earns 41st NCAA Tournament Bid
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Orange men's basketball team drew the No. 11 seed in the Midwest Region when the bracket for the 2021 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship was unveiled on Sunday night.

Syracuse (16-9) received one of the 36 at-large berths into the 68-team field and will face No. 6 seed San Diego State in the first round on Friday, March 19 in a 9:40 PM tip-off at Butler's Hinkle Fieldhouse. The game will be televised on CBS with Jim Nantz, Bill Raftery, Grant Hill and Tracy Wolfson on the call.
"I've seen San Diego State play a couple of times," Orange head coach Jim Boeheim said. "They're a really good shooting team. It will be a real tough challenge for us, but we're happy to have the challenge ahead of us."
SYRACUSE NCAA HISTORY
The Orange are making their 41st NCAA Tournament appearance overall and the 35th under Boeheim. Syracuse is 64-40 (.615) in NCAA Tournament play and has advanced to six Final Fours (1975, 1987, 1996, 2003, 2013, 2016). The Orange have reached three national championship games (1987, 1996, 2003), winning the title in 2003.

This season marks the second time Syracuse has been seeded 11th. The first time was in 2018 when the Orange were the No. 11 seed in the Midwest Region and advanced to the Sweet Sixteen. Syracuse is 3-1 all-time as a No. 11 seed. The 2018 tournament also marks the last time the Orange was placed in the Midwest Region.
ABOUT THE AZTECS
San Diego State earned an automatic bid in the tournament by winning the Mountain West Championship as the top-seeded team. The Aztecs, coached by Brian Dutcher, are 23-4 overall, including a 14-3 Mountain West record.
The Aztecs are led by Mountain West Player of the Year Matt Mitchell and second-team All-Mountain West performer Jordan Schakel. Mitchell averages a team-best 15.4 points per game and grabs 5.5 boards per contest. Schakel scores 14.3 points per contest and ranks among the nation's best 3-point shooters. The Torrance, Calif. native makes 46.7 percent of his attempts from beyond the arc, good for third-best in the country. He also leads the Mountain West with 2.9 made triples per contest.

All-Mountain West Honorable Mention selection Nathan Menseh leads the Aztecs in rebounding at 6.1 boards per contest.

Syracuse is 2-0 all-time against San Diego State. The teams played on November 11, 2012 aboard the retired aircraft carrier USS Midway. The Orange emerged victorious in the contest, 62-49.
The Orange hosted the Aztecs in the 2007 NIT. An NIT-record crowd of 26,752 in the Dome watched Syracuse prevail, 80-64.
