3/17/2021 9:48:00 PM | Men's Lacrosse
Syracuse hosts Holy Cross at Noon on ACC Network Saturday, here are five things to know about the matchup:
1. New Faces on the Schedule
This is the third-straight game vs. a first-time opponent for Syracuse. Syracuse's schedule is traditionally known for having the same recurring rivalries and matchups on it, but the COVID-19 pandemic's impact on lacrosse scheduling has created new opportunities.
The last time the Orange played three first-time opponents in the same season since 1977 – head coach John Desko's sophomore year on campus – when Syracuse faced Brockport, Ithaca and St. Lawrence.
It's the first time Syracuse has played three-straight games against first-time opponents since 1972, when the Orange opened the season with a five-day, four game road trip against Delaware, Towson, UMBC and Morgan State. It was the first time they'd played each institution.
2. Offensive Outburst
Over its three-game winning streak, Syracuse scored 20, 17 and 17 goals respectively. It's the first time since 2004 that Syracuse has scored 17+ in three-consecutive outings.
If they can duplicate the performance again, it'll be the first time since 1995 that 'Cuse notched 17+ goals in four-straight contests.
3. Ten Below
Syracuse held Stony Brook to nine goals last time out, making it the 63rd straight game that Syracuse won when holding their opponent to single digits.
4. Desko Climbing the Coaching Ladder
Hall of Fame head coach John Desko enters Saturday's game tied with Howdy Myers for 17th all-time in NCAA Division I with 261 career victories.
A win on Saturday would move Desko into a tie with longtime Towson head coach Carl Runk for 16th on the NCAA Division I ledger with 262. Tony Seaman is next at 263.
5. Conference Play Upcoming
Following Saturday's game 'Cuse will take a break from its non-conference slate and play back-to-back ACC games.
The Orange will hit the road for the first time next Thursday, visiting No. 1 Duke and will then host No. 8 Notre Dame on April 3, before resuming non-conference play with a game against UAlbany on April 8.
