SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Freshman Deandre Kerr scored the only goal the Orange would need in the 34th minute as the Syracuse defeated Saint Francis, 1-0, at the SU Soccer Stadium on Tuesday.
Â
"It's an important win for us today," said Syracuse head coach Ian McIntyre. "I'm delighted for the guys. We had such an emotional loss on Friday (at NC State in overtime). I'm just happy for the guys and happy to see smiles on their faces. It's tough to win soccer matches at this level and I thought we were pretty dominant from start to finish."
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Orange (2-7-4) were the more dangerous team from the start of the match as they recorded three shots, two of which went of the crossbar, and six corner kicks in the first 15 minutes. Syracuse continued to apply pressure and broke through in the 34th minute.
Â
The play started when senior Simon Triantafillou took possession of the ball at midfield and played it forward to Kerr. Kerr worked around two defenders and beat Saint Francis goalkeeper Jonas Dieseler off the left foot to give the Orange the lead.
Â
Syracuse dominated possession in the second half and created several scoring chances but couldn't convert. The Red Flash had one final opportunity to even the score in the 88th minute, but 'Cuse goalkeeper Russell Shealy was there for the save.
Â
OF NOTE
Kerr has now scored a goal in Syracuse's last two games and leads the squad with four goals this season. Shealy posted his second clean sheet in the last three games and finished with two saves. Dieseler made five saves for Saint Francis, including a stop on Jeorgio Kocevski's shot in the 80th minute that appeared to be headed to the back of the net before he knocked it away from the goal line.
Â
The final statistics showed the Orange's dominance in the game. Syracuse outshot Saint Francis, 18-4, and held a 14-1 advantage in corner kicks.
