JP Trojan was the first member of the Orange to earn a spot in the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Wednesday night.
Trojan finished 11th in the 10,000-meters at the NCAA East Prelim, securing his spot as the top-12 finishers advance. Syracuse hopes to have additional runners join him, as the women's competition gets underway on Thursday, with six women in action, plus Aidan Tooker yet to race for the men.
Trojan, who out-performed his seed by four spots, crossed the line in 28:59.47. The race was quick compared to previous seasons, as the top-five finishers all broke the stadium record at the University of North Florida. Hofstra's Alex Masai was the winner in 28:29.17.
Syracuse had five runners in the event, the most of any school. Joe Dragon was the second member of the Orange across the line in 30:02.39. Matthew Scrape finished in 30:56.44, Silas Derfel crossed in 31:58.05 and Dominic Hockenbury did not finish.
Action continues on Thursday with Shaleah Colaire racing in the 400-meter hurdles, before Amanda Vestri, Annie Heffernan, Jordan Jacob and Abigail Spiers race in the women's 10k semifinal.
