Three Syracuse student-athletes were named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District teams and will now advance to the Academic All-America ballot.
The honor recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. Syracuse and Duke are the only ACC programs with three all-district honorees.
Defensive lineman Kingsley Jonathan, placekicker Andre Szmyt and wide receiver Anthony Queeley were honored on the 23-man team from District 1 (Division I (FBS and FCS) schools in CT, MA, ME, NH, RI, VT). The team was selected by position (offense and defense) from a ballot of nominees. In order to be nominated, each player must have over a 3.3 GPA coupled with strong on-field accolades.
Jonathan has accrued numerous accolades both on and off the field at Syracuse. This is his second time being a CoSIDA Academic All-District selection after doing so in 2019 as well. Last season, he was the winner of the Jim Tatum Award, which honors the ACC's top senior football student-athlete. He was also a Campbell Trophy Semifinalist, a Wuerffel Trophy Watch List honoree and a Senior CLASS Award candidate.
Jonathan earned his degree in Information Management and Technology. He enters the 2021 season with 10.5 career sacks, 16.0 tackles for loss and 81 career tackles.
Szmyt has been a record-breaking kicker for the Orange. Having made 56-of-65 career field goals (86-percent). He enters his fourth season as the team's primary kicker with 291 career points (8.3 per game). He's currently the program's all-time leader in field goal percentage (.862), fourth in scoring (291 points), third in 50+ yard field goals (4), third in PATs made (123) and third in field goals made (56).
The 2018 Lou Groza Award Winner was a unanimous All-American in 2018 and is a two-time All-ACC selection. He earned his undergraduate degree in psychology last month.
Queeley saw his most productive season to date in 2020. The redshirt-sophomore wideout started all-11 games last season, making 37 catches for 378 yards and a pair of touchdowns. The Orlando, Florida native was predominantly a special teamer the year prior, before working his way into a starting role this past year. He is majoring in sport management.
CoSIDA Academic All-Americans – which will be selected from the all-district teams – will be announced in July.
