Caira, Canada Play for Bronze Tuesday

Syracuse, N.Y.- Syracuse University alumna Jenna Caira and the Canadian softball team posted a 3-2 record in the preliminary round of the Tokyo Olympics earning a spot in Tuesday's bronze medal game. Canada and Mexico will face off at 1 p.m. JST (12 a.m. ET). Canada opened Olympic competition with a 4-0 win over Mexico in the first game of the prelims on July 21. Team Canada is in pursuit of its first Olympic softball medal in its history.

Caira appeared in four games during the preliminary round. She is 1-1 with a 0.72 earned run average in 9.2 innings pitched in Tokyo. After the 4-0 shutout of Mexico, Caira pitched 2.2 innings in a 1-0 loss to the United States on July 22. She and her teammates bounced back with a 7-1 win over Australia a day later to improve to 2-1 overall at the Olympics. Caira earned the win against the Australians, pitching 4.2 innings in relief allowing two hits and striking out three batters. Canada lost in extra innings, 1-0, to host Japan on Sunday setting its gold medal hopes out of reach, but an 8-1 win over Italy on Monday secured a spot in the bronze medal game Tuesday.

USA and Japan will play in the gold medal game Tuesday, at 8 p.m. JST (7 a.m. ET).
