SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Orange lost to Iowa State in a five-set match, 3-2, on Friday at the Cy-Hawk Series Tournament at the University of Iowa. Senior Polina Shemanova recorded a season-high 26 kills on a .362 hitting percentage and recorded 14 digs for the Orange (7-1 overall, 0-0 ACC).
"We played a better team tonight," said head coach Leonid Yelin. "We needed more people to produce, and we just couldn't get there. There was an opportunity in the fifth set, we were the first team to eight, but we got tired and lost focus. Now it's time to recover both mentally and physically after a long match and reset for tomorrow."
The Orange came out rolling in the first set, going on a 6-0 run before the Cyclones (6-1) could get on the board. Iowa State battled back to make it a close set in the Orange's 25-20 win. Set two was nearly a foil of the first, with Iowa State opening the set 5-1. Syracuse never took the lead in the second, losing 25-21. Syracuse battled the Cyclones in the third set, earning its first lead at 21-20 after being down as many as five and won the set 25-22. The fourth set was back and forth until the Cyclones went on a 6-0 run to take an 18-10 lead and won the set 25-19. Iowa State won the fifth set, 15-11 to seal the victory in the match.
