SYRACUSE, N.Y. − Syracuse women's tennis is set to see its second action of the fall as its freshmen duo travels to the University of Pennsylvania campus in Philadelphia for the 2021 ITA Northeast Regional Championship (Oct. 1-3). The Orange will be represented by newcomers Miyuka Kimoto and Shiori Ito. In addition, sophomore Viktoriya Kanapatskaya is preparing for the ITA All-American Championships, running from Oct. 4-10.
Â
The 'Cuse will join 19 other programs at the UPenn regional competition, including in-state foes Cornell, Colgate, Buffalo, Binghamton, and St. Bonaventure. Doubles play is set to begin Friday. Kimoto and Ito received a first-round bye and will take on the winner of the match between Deniz Soyer and Mandisa Walle from Hofstra and Binghamton's Natalia Aruj and Kyra Bergmann in the second round.
Â
The Orange have found success at the regional level in recent years. All-American Gabrielle Knutson won the singles crown in 2017, capping off three consecutive years of Syracuse regional singles titles. Senior Sofya Treshcheva took the doubles championship with teammate Sofya Golubovskaya in the 2018 tournament, and Miranda Ramirez advanced to singles semifinals in 2019. The tournament did not take place due to COVID-19 in 2020.
Â
Kanapatskaya begins play at the ITA Women's All-American Championship on Monday, Oct. 4. She was one of 21 automatic qualifiers into the tournament's main draw. The event takes place at LTP Mount Pleasant in Charleston, S.C.
