56th Annual LetterWinner of Distinction Celebration to Honor Four

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse University will celebrate four former student-athletes at the 56th annual LetterWinner of Distinction dinner on Friday, February 25 at Drumlins Country Club. The recognition is bestowed upon individuals who have left their mark on the athletics program and for their success after graduation. The 2022 honorees include John Lally '82 (football), Lynne (Della Pelle) Pascale '81, MS '11 (rowing) Reggie Terry '93 (football), and the late Carrie Urton McCaw '98 (volleyball).
"We are thrilled to recognize such a distinguished and diverse group of people as our 2022 LetterWinners of Distinction," said Director of Athletics John Wildhack. "Each honoree made significant contributions at Syracuse University as students and as athletes, and they continue to make a profound impact professionally and personally in business, education, coaching and philanthropy. Their Orange legacy has spanned nearly six decades and will continue well into the future."
The LetterWinner of Distinction reception will begin at 6 pm followed by dinner at 7 pm. Ticket information will be available on January 24th, 2022. For further information, please call 'Cuse Athletics Fund Office (315-443-1419). If the event is postponed due to University COVID protocols, communication will happen immediately. The Letterwinner of Distinction event is being held in the spring this year due to COVID. The future plans for the event include a return to the tradition of hosting the event in the Fall, beginning with fall 2022.
In addition to the annual LetterWinner of Distinction dinner, the honorees will be recognized during the Syracuse men's basketball game against Duke on Saturday, Feb. 26.
John A. Lally '82 (football)
An offensive guard and three-year letterwinner for the Orange football team from 1977 to 1981, Lally earned a dual degree in marketing and transportation and distribution management from what is now the Whitman School of Management.
A native of Clarence, N.Y., Lally was part of the offensive line which paved the way for Joe Morris to become Syracuse's all-time leading rusher. In 1979, the Orange earned an invitation to the Independence Bowl, where they beat McNeese State.
After graduation, Lally became involved with his family's business, PCB Piezotronics Inc., an engineering and manufacturing company, with technical emphasis on the incorporation of integrated circuit-piezoelectric sensor technology. He took over the business operation and instilled a new corporate culture of excellence, setting the company goal of double-digit growth each year. Through his leadership as president and owner, the company, which is headquartered in Depew, N.Y., became a world leader and innovator in multiple sensor technologies and was reorganized into various divisions and product groups, establishing representation in more than 60 countries worldwide.
Lally, and his wife, Laura, are active in their communities. They have been involved with such organizations as the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Western New York, along with supporting many other charitable organizations. In 2019, the Lally's established a four-year scholarship at the Whitman School in honor of his mother, Doris, and made a $25 million gift earmarked for athletics facilities.
Lynne Pascale '81, MS '11 (rowing)
Philadelphia native Lynne Pascale rowed on the University's first intercollegiate women's team in 1977-78. The four-year letterwinner was a member of the Varsity 8 throughout her career. Following her sophomore year, Pascale rowed for the Philadelphia-based Bachelors Barge Club in the lightweight eight that won the 1979 National Women's Rowing Association (NWRA) championship. During her senior year the Orange competed at the AIAW Championships in San Diego. While attending Syracuse, she spent summers as a coach for the Syracuse Chargers learn to row program teaching the sport to children and adults.
Pascale earned her Syracuse University undergraduate degree in anthropology in 1981 and her Master of Social Science degree in 2011. She also earned her New York State Teaching Certification from LeMoyne College in 1995.
Immediately after earning her bachelor's degree, Pascale worked for three years at Dean Witter as an account executive before returning to school to complete her New York State Teaching Certification at LeMoyne College in 1995. She taught global studies, U.S. History and Participation in Government at Chittenango High School from 1996 through 2000. Pascale's third stint in the classroom as a student resulted in an MS from the Maxwell School and led her to the Director of Development role at the Onondaga Historical Association. After five years at the OHA, Pascale launched her own business – Farmer Street Pantry, a specialty food company that won the 2020 Small Business Administration (SBA) Excellence Award for Central New York. Pascale recently began her tenure as the development director for On Point for College, which helps traditional and non-traditional students overcome the barriers to higher education.
Her impact on the Syracuse community extends well beyond the water. Pascale serves as a board member for the Jewish Community Center and the Syracuse Alumni Rowing Association, including as its president from 2014-16, and as a volunteer for the Matilda Jocelyn Gage Foundation. She was as a substitute teacher in the Syracuse City School District from March through June 2021.
Reggie Terry '93, MA '94, CAS '99 (football)
A leader by example in the classroom and on the field as an Orange linebacker from 1988 through 1993, Reggie Terry continues to impact the lives of those around him in the world of intercollegiate athletics. Terry stepped off the gridiron, after playing on four bowl championship teams for the Orange, into intercollegiate athletics administration, where he remains today as the senior associate athletics director at Boston College. The BIG EAST Academic All-Star and Hitachi Promise of Tomorrow Scholarship winner earned his undergraduate degree in history and education in 1993 and his MS in Education in 1994. In 1999, he completed a Certificate of Advanced Study in education leadership. Terry is working toward his PhD in higher education.
Terry began his professional career as a graduate assistant and administrative supervisor in the Orange athletics department in 1993 and remained in that role until joining the Syracuse football staff as the director of football operations and player development in 2000. In 2006, he was promoted to associate athletics director for football operations. At Syracuse, Terry participated in 12 bowl games as a player and administrator and was a member of the staff for four BIG EAST Championships.
In 2007, Terry moved to the National Football League as the Arizona Cardinals director of football administration. During his five-year tenure in Arizona, Terry participated in team planning and operations for Arizona's trip to Super Bowl XLIII.
In 2013 he returned to college athletics as the associate athletics director for football player personnel and football operations before his promotion to his current role with the Eagles at the end of the 2020 football season.
A native of Hempstead, N.Y., Terry also worked as an intern with the New York Jets football operations department in 1997 before interning with the NFL's Management Council in 1998.
Carrie Urton McCaw '98 (volleyball, posthumous)
A team captain and four-time All-BIG EAST Academic team selection, Carrie Urton McCaw set the Syracuse record for matches played in a season and remains in the top 10 on three Orange record lists. Nearly 25 years after she graduated, McCaw still ranks second in career matches played, third in career assists and ninth in career digs. The Orange won 85 matches with McCaw in the lineup from 1994-97.
In February 2020, McCaw, her daughter, Kacey, and friend Lesley Prather and her daughter, Rhyan, were killed when the van they were travelling to a club volleyball tournament in Kansas City was hit by truck driven by a man charged with DWI.
McCaw graduated from Syracuse's Whitman School of Management with a degree in managerial law and public policy and a minor in political science. She spent one year as an assistant volleyball coach at Rutgers before starting her career at Ice Miller LLP, where she was one of the founding members of the Collegiate Sports Practice in 1999. McCaw spent nearly 20 years as a specialist conducting athletics department operations and programmatic reviews. During that time Ice Miller became one of the most recognized names in NCAA compliance and infractions matters across the country. McCaw, who earned her Master of Science in management from Indiana Wesleyan University in 2002, quickly became one of the most well-respected and relied upon advisors on NCAA compliance and infractions matters for colleges and universities and athletic conferences, as well as for a number of the largest athletic apparel and shoe companies in the US.
A native of Louisville, McCaw graduated from Assumption High School in 1994 where she was a volleyball and basketball letterwinner. She continued her close association with Assumption and her grade school, St. Raphael serving as a coach for many sports and supporting school-wide activities and was an active member of the parish. McCaw and her husband, David, have four children.
