CORAL GABLES, FL.-- Joseph Girard III (26 points), Jesse Edwards (22 points) and Cole Swider (20 points) gave Syracuse a trio of 20-point scorers but it was not enough in an 88-87 loss at Miami. The Orange (7-7, 1-2 ACC) were unable to stop the Hurricanes (12-3, 4-0 ACC) win streak which was extended to eight.
Syracuse finished with a school-record 17 3-pointers. Girard's offensive outburst included a career-best seven 3-pointers. Edwards' 22-point total was a personal best, as was his seven blocked shots. He added eight rebounds before fouling out.
Miami sixth-year guard Charlie Moore contributed a team-high 25 points, which included six 3-pointers, and six assists.
HOW THE GAME WAS DECIDED
After trailing by 18 points in the first half and 14 at the intermission, the Hurricanes used defensive pressure and hot shooting to get back into the contest.
Miami stormed out of the break and constructed a 20-4 run in just over five minutes to take the lead, 50-48. Moore hit two of Miami's five 3-pointers in that span. There were six lead changes in the next 2:39 of play, and the hosts claimed the advantage for good when Anthony Walker made two free throws to put the Hurricanes ahead, 56-55.
EDWARDS INSIDE, 3-POINTERS OUTSIDE GIVE SU STRONG START
Syracuse got on the board first with a first-possession dunk from Edwards. Moore's first two 3-pointers put Miami ahead, 8-7, but the Orange responded. Girard III hit a 3-pointer to spark 10 unanswered points for Syracuse. Swider also notched a 3-pointer and both Jimmy Boeheim and Jesse Edwards made a basket a piece during the drive pushed the Orange in front, 17-8.
Miami shaved the lead to four, 17-13, but the Orange erupted again, this time with a 14-3 stretch keyed by 3-pointers from Swider, Girard (2) and Benny Williams. Still another 3-pointer by Girard with :59 seconds left in the half, provided Syracuse with its largest margin, 44-26. Miami scored the last four points of the opening period and the Orange entered halftime ahead, 44-30.
HURRICANE WARNINGS
Miami produced 58 points in the second half, the most yielded in a 20-minute period by Syracuse this season. The Hurricane takeover produced a lead of eight points and it was seven with 27 seconds left before Syracuse posted a furious rally.
Girard hit his sixth 3-pointer with 11 seconds left. After Moore connected on two free throws, Swider swished a 3-pointer to make it 87-84 Miami with four ticks on the clock. Isaiah Wong made one of two tries from the line before Swider hit another 3-pointer just before the end of regulation to make it a one-point loss.
TURNOVERS
The Orange effort was hurt by a season-high 19 turnovers. Miami turned those 19 miscues into 25 points.
