Syracuse (7-7 overall, 1-2 ACC) closes out its stretch in the south against Wake Forest (12-3 overall, 2-2 ACC) on Saturday, Jan.8. Tip time is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. in LJVM Coliseum. Fans who can't attend the game in person can watch on the ACC Regional Sports Network.
SETTING THE STAGE
The Orange are seeking a victory after a tough, 88-87 loss to Miami on Wednesday, Jan. 5. Despite Syracuse owning a 14-point lead at halftime, the Hurricanes managed to battle back and claim the advantage in the second half. Syracuse had three players top 20 points -- Joseph Girard III (26), Jesse Edwards (22) and Cole Swider (20) -- but it was not enough to overcome Miami.
The Demon Deacons look to build off their 76-54 win against Florida State on Tuesday, Jan. 4. The win marked their largest margin of victory over an ACC opponent since the 2016-17 season. Prior to that triumph, Wake Forest had lost its last two games -- against Louisville and Miami.Â
THE SYRACUSE-WAKE FOREST SERIES
Saturday's contest will be the 11th Syracuse-Wake Forest pairing. Syracuse has lost only one of the 10 games so far. The Orange are on a four-game winning streak in games with Wake Forest. Â The most recent encounter went to the Orange, 75-73, in February of 2020.Â
EDWARDS AND GIRARD III BECOME ACC LEADERS
in addition to scoring a career-high 22 points at Miami, Jesse Edwards contributed seven blocked shots. The swat effort put him first among ACC performers in blocks and blocked-shot effort average. In the national rankings, he is 11th and 13th, respectively.
Joseph Girard III had a personal-best seven 3-pointers against the Hurricanes. He is the ACC leader in 3-point average (3.14) and 3-point field goal percentage (.484).
WILLIAMS ON THE OTHER SIDE
Demon Deacons graduate guard Alonso Williams has earned ACC Player of the Week twice this season so far and was named Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week on Dec. 21. This set of honors came after Wake Forest's victories against VMI and Charlotte. Williams tallied a career-high 36 points against the Keydets and followed that up with a 34 point-outing against Charlotte.
Williams became the first Demon Deacon to earn back-to-back conference player of the week honors since Jeff Teague on Jan. 12 and 19, 2009.
