Tivnan Tally Helps 'Cuse Tie Up Tigers
10/14/2022 9:56:00 PM | Women's Soccer
Graduate student Jenna Tivnan headed in a corner kick from junior Kate Murphy with 15:58 remaining to earn Syracuse (8-5-2, 1-4-2 ACC) a 1-1 tie with visiting Clemson (7-4-3, 3-3-1) at the SU Soccer Stadium on Friday night.
The outcome represented a dramatic turnaround from last year's match in South Carolina, won by the Tigers, 8-0.
HOW THE MATCH WAS DECIDED
Murphy's corner kick had just enough height and distance on it to allow Tivnan to battle her way to a spot where she could jump and redirect the ball past Clemson keeper Halle Mackiewicz. It marked Tivnan's second tally of the season and represented Murphy's third assist.
TIGERS SCRATCH FIRST
Clemson managed to get on the board first. Renee Lyles picked up a loose rebound in front of the Syracuse net and scored her fourth of the season, 16:28 into the first half.
The Orange countered, thanks in part to the efforts of graduate student Blue Ellis. She had three of her squad-leading four shot attempts in the first 45 minutes of play.
SECOND HALF SYRACUSE RALLY
Syracuse picked up the pressure after the intermission while battling for the equalizer. At the same time, the Orange's defensive adjustments kept the Tigers from extending the lead. Freshman goalkeeper Shea Vanderbosch, who finished with four stops, played her part. She made a critical stop on Clemson's Carolina Conti just minutes before Tivnan knotted the score.Â
NOTEABLE NOTES
Syracuse plays at Pittsburgh on Thursday, October 20, at 6 p.m. The match will be televised on the ACC Network.
