Orange Take Down Crimson Hawks In Exhibition

Syracuse emerged victorious in an exhibition matchup with Division II Indiana (Pa.), 86-68, inside the JMA Wireless Dome on Tuesday night.Â

Four Syracuse starters put up double-figures --Â senior guard Joseph Girard III (17), senior center Jesse Edwards (16), sophomore forward Benny Williams (15), and freshman guard Judah Mintz (14) each topped 10 points.

WHEN THE GAME WAS DECIDED
Freshman forward Benny Williams hit a deep 3-pointer to give the Orange the lead for good at 56-54, with 10:29 to go in the contest. Syracuse outscored the Crimson Hawks, 30-14, the rest of the way.
COACH BOEHEIM SAID
"I think for the first time out there were a lot of positive things and some things that we can look at the tape and try to get better at," said head coach Jim Boeheim. "In the second, Judah (Mintz) got it going. We got the ball, got it to Jesse (Edwards), and banged on the boards, and did a really good job there."

CUTTING IT CLOSE
The Orange started the night off with a 5-0 run in the opening minute of play, as Edwards netted a second-chance layup and Girard III converted a 3-pointer. IUP responded with a 10-4 run over the next four minutes to take a one-point lead with 14:13 left to play in the half.

Syracuse eventually held the lead for 11 minutes of the first frame and expanded its advantage to as many as five points twice.

Freshman Justin Taylor tied the game, 28-28, by nailing two shots at the free-throw line with 1:39 left to go in the opening frame. SU locked in back-to-back layups from the freshman pair of Maliq Brown and Judah Mintz, putting the Orange ahead 32-30 with just ten seconds before the break. IUP's Dave Morris nailed a surprise buzzer-beater from just across half court, to give the visitors a 33-32 lead.Â
THE SPARK
Mintz helped ignite a second-half comeback by hitting a jumper with 12:36 remaining. Williams followed with seven straight points and the Orange were off on a 16-0 run. By the end of the four-minute stretch, the Orange had built a 63-54 lead.Â
NOTABLE NUMBERS
- Tonight's win was the 24th straight exhibition victory for Syracuse, a streak that extends back to the 2010-11 season.Â
- Williams recorded a double-double tonight by recording 15 points and grabbing a game-high 12 rebounds.Â
- Syracuse led Indiana (Pa.) in second-chance points, 21-12.
- After converting just 12-of-29 (.414), the Orange made 19-of-31 (.613) over the final 20 minutes.
- Dave Morris led the Crimson Hawks with 21 points.
NEXT GAME
The Orange will return to the JMA Wireless Dome on Tuesday, Nov. 1, when they host Southern New Hampshire in their final exhibition game. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. and the contest will be streamed live on ACCNX.
