Syracuse Ties #2 Virginia, 2-2
10/9/2022 4:30:00 PM | Women's Soccer
Sophomore Koby Commandant scored with 1:28 remaining and Syracuse (8-5-1, 1-4-1) tied #2 Virginia (10-2-2, 3-2-1), 2-2, in Charlottesville, Va.
The tie marked the first time Syracuse has not lost to Virginia in eight all-time meetings.
HOW THE MATCH WAS DECIDED
Sophomore midfielder Pauline Machtens forced a turnover deep in Virginia territory. After securing possession, she got a shot attempt off that Virginia goalkeeper Cayla White was able to steer aside. Commandant pounced on the loss ball and drove it home to knot the contest at 2-2.
AN EARLY ORANGE ADVANTAGE
Syracuse struck early in an unconventional manner. With the Orange on the attack, Machtens sent a crossing pass in front of the Cavalier goal. The ball deflected off the Virginia defender and Syracuse led, 1-0, just 1:47 into the contest.
VIRGINIA TAKES CONTROL
The hosts regrouped quickly after falling behind early. Virginia pressured the Orange and it paid off at the 23:02 mark when Maggie Cagle scored to even things up. The two teams went into the intermission tied, despite a 13-1 shot-attempt advantage owned by the Cavs.
The second half continued in similar fashion, with Virginia controlling play. Cagle played a part in the Cavs taking the lead for the first time, setting up Jill Flammia at 62:27. The net-finder moved Virginia in front, 2-1.
VANDERBOSCH KEEPS THE ORANGE CLOSE
Freshmen goalkeeper Shea Vanderbosch helped keep the Orange within reach. She finished with a career-best nine saves, including a number of diving stops. Â
She thwarted a header from Haley Hopkins with 28:45 remaining. Vanderbosch then stopped Cagle four minutes later after the Virginia forward had broken free in the box.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
Syracuse hosts Clemson on Friday, October 14, at 7:00 p.m. at the SU Soccer Stadium. Admission is free.
