How it Happened
- Syracuse controlled the action early, pinning Maryland down for the first five minutes, but the Orange could not manage a chance on goal.
- With five minutes to go in the first quarter, Maryland had a breakaway chance, but Borzymowski slid out and broke up the play.
- Thirty seconds later, Maryland had the first corner of the game, but was thwarted by Borzymowski on the initial shot and then again on the rebound chance, keeping it 0-0 through 15 minutes.
- Six minutes into the second quarter, Comans put the Orange up 1-0 after slotting in a pass intended for de Vries but the ball skipped off a Terp foot and into the net for a 1-0 lead that held to halftime.
- Early in the third quarter, the Orange fought off three straight Maryland corners, with Borzymowski making four saves in the sequence to keep it a 1-0 game heading into the fourth quarter.
- Less than a minute into the fourth quarter, Maryland broke through on its 10th corner of the game from DeBerdine. Ten minutes later, the Terps went up 2-1 on a backhanded goal from Klautz with DeBerdine on the assist.
- Just a minute later, Syracuse tied the game at 2-2 as van den Nieuwenhof used some deception. A noted big shot on the corner, the junior used a soft touch to go bar down on a corner with Comans and Qugley on the assist and insert, respectively.
- Both teams traded chances through the first two overtime periods as the Orange utilized their speed up top but neither side could score. The Orange had a corner in each extra period, but Calandra made a save on each chance.
- Syracuse scored on its first two shootout chances by de Vries and van den Nieuwenhof, while Borzymowski stopped the Terps two shots. Syracuse could not find the cage again as Maryland scored on three of the next four chances to advance to the NCAA Semifinals.
- Maryland out-shot the Orange 17-11.Â
- Borzymowski was stellar in goal, making 10 saves. Calandra made four saves in her 80 minutes before Paige Kieft stepped into the net for the shootout.
- The Orange defensive penalty corner unit was busy but sturdy as they stopped 10 of 11 corner chances for the Terps.
- With the 2022 season completed, Syracuse will get ready for the non-championship season.
- The annual award season will be coming soon. Please stay tuned to cuse.com for updates.
