SYRACUSE, N.Y. – With the 2022 fall ball slate finished and the 2023 season on the horizon, Syracuse University men's lacrosse has announced five student-athletes to serve as captains for this academic year.
By player vote and staff selection, Pete Fiorini, Max Rosa, Griffin Cook, Cole Kirst, and Caden Kol were selected to wear a captains' C on their jerseys this season.
""We couldn't be more excited about the five young men that were elected captains by their teammates," said head coach Gary Gait. "They have shown a great commitment to doing what's best for the team, developing our culture, and moving this team forward. Each brings something different to the table, but the common theme is their strong desire to lead and do what's best for their teammates and this program."
A redshirt senior midfielder from Baldwinsville, New York, Fiorini has played in 21 career games, racking a career-best seven points last season with two goals and five helpers. He has caused turnovers to his credit, in addition to five ground balls.
Another local product from West Genesee High School, Rosa transitioned to the short-stick defensive midfielder position and now has 17 games played to his credit. Last season, Rosa picked up a career-best 14 ground balls while causing five of his six turnovers while returning from injury.
A Jamesville-DeWitt graduate, Cook has played in 40 career games for the Orange, racking 14 goals and 14 assists for 28 points, scoring a balanced four goals and four assists last season through the first eight games before suffering an injury. In the ride game, Cook has caused 16 turnovers, including seven in just five games of a shortened 2020 campaign and another four last season.
A defenseman from California, Kol appeared in nine games last season, grabbing one ground ball. Prior to entering Syracuse, Kol was an Inside Lacrosse Power 100 recruit and a top-25 rated defenseman for the 2020 class.
A graduate student transfer, Kirst played in 47 games for the Mountain Hawks, scoring 55 goals and 26 assists along the way. Over the summer, Kirst was a member of the gold-medal winning U21 team for USA Lacrosse, the first-ever graduate student to play for the U21/U20 team.
