12/2/2022 10:02:00 AM | Men's Lacrosse
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Heading into his redshirt senior season, Syracuse University men's lacrosse captain Pete Fiorini has been selected as the winner for the ACC Dr. Pepper Go Teach Tuition Giveaway.
A Baldwinsville, New York product, Fiorini was selected as the winner of a $2,500 scholarship, based on academic record, athletic versatility, and devotion to the University and community, as it best exemplifies what it means to be an ACC student-athlete.
"Receiving this scholarship was so important to me," said Fiorini of the award. "I can put it towards my tuition next semester as I finish up my undergrad in health and physical education. I am thankful I was granted this opportunity."
Majoring in health and exercise science in the School of Education, Fiorini was recently selected to serve as one of the team captains for the 2022-23 academic year by his teammates. The former Baldwinsville High School standout has played in 21 games for the Orange since 2019, including 13 games last season. Over the 2022 season, Fiorini scored a career-best seven points on two goals and five assists, including a man-up goal at North Carolina (April 16).
Fiorini comes from a line of educators, influenced heavily by his father, Peter Fiorini Jr., an educator and high school lacrosse coach in Baldwinsville for 37 years. Both Fiorini III sisters are also educators in the same district as well.
"My passion first comes from my father," said Fiorini. "A lot of my inspiration comes from my family, and I've built on that and followed in their footsteps.
Next fall, Fiorini III will complete his student teaching for healthy and physical education, and will look to pursue a career teaching physical education and coaching lacrosse.
From the ACC
In conjunction with the 2022 Subway ACC Football Championship Game, the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) and the College Football Playoff (CFP) Foundation have announced they are funding $75,000 in classroom resource projects in three local markets - Chapel Hill (home of Coastal Division Champion North Carolina), Clemson (home of Atlantic Division Champion Clemson) and Charlotte (host city of the ACC Title Game). The projects are designed to meet teachers' needs in area schools, including classroom supplies and mental health resources.
Additionally, during ACC FanFest, fans will be encouraged to visit the Extra Yard for Teachers bus activation to show support of educators by taking photos and saying thank you to teachers that made a positive difference in their life by signing the Great Teachers Change Lives gratitude board.
"It is an honor to partner with the CFP Foundation to recognize and provide support to the incredible individuals that dedicate their lives to the teaching profession," said ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips, Ph.D. "The ACC continues to be a proud supporter of teachers and their commitment to education, as well as the endless time, energy and enthusiasm they bring to their respective schools, classrooms and students on a daily basis."
"Championship games always bring communities together in celebration and it's important that while we celebrate our teams, we also recognize the K-12 teachers that are supporting youth in the communities these institutions call home," said CFP Foundation Executive Director Britton Banowsky. "The CFP Foundation is proud to work with the ACC to deliver classroom resources to the communities involved in this year's championship game and know these projects will create a more positive learning experience."
