PHILADELPHIA – The Orange hit the road for the first of seven road matches in the spring season as they travel to Philadelphia to take on Drexel on Sunday, Feb. 6. Syracuse enters the match at 3-1, marking the sixth time in eight seasons that coach Younes Limam's team has won at least three of its first four matches. The match is Drexel's home opener, and the Dragons enter the match 0-2 after a loss Friday against Rutgers.
Syracuse has never faced Drexel on the tennis court before. The Dragons are led by graduate student Mya Fuentes and senior Tara Veluvolu. Fuentes achieved her 60th career victory across singles and doubles play in Drexel's season opener at Penn, and Veluvolu notched her 50th with a tiebreaker doubles win via tiebreaker. Drexel was 4-6 in the 2021 spring season.
The Orange have some experience playing in the Hecht and Hamlin Tennis Center despite this being the first match between these two programs. Freshmen Shiori Ito and Miyuka Kimoto visited Philadelphia in October for the ITA Northeast Regional tournament. The Japanese tandem defeated two pairs from Temple and one from Binghamton to clinch a doubles ticket to the Super Regional tournament. Ito was also victorious in two singles matches as part of her 5-0 trip to Regionals, one of which was a 6-0, 6-2 win over Drexel's Isabel Cabrerizo.
Last Sunday's 6-1 win over Cornell capped off a four-match homestand to start spring competition for the Orange. Polina Kozyreva and Ito improved to 4-0 in singles matches, and senior Sofya Treshcheva entered the spring winning column as well. Sophomore Ines Fonte and reigning All-American Viktoriya Kanapatskaya maintained their perfect doubles mark, cruising to a 6-2 final. 'Cuse returns home for matches against Buffalo and Niagara after the brief road trip.
