Syracuse University honored Duke Hall of Fame coach Mike Krzyzewski in a pre-game ceremony before the Orange hosted the #7/6 Blue Devils at the Dome.
Krzyzewski, who previously announced he was retiring from coaching at the end of the 2021-22 season, was making his final regular-season appearance as the Duke coach in Syracuse.
The largest on-campus crowd of the season in college basketball was on hand for the presentation. Prior to tip-off, more than 31,000 tickets had been distributed.
Syracuse University established the Captain Michael William Krzyzewski Award for Leadership and Civic Engagement in honor of the Duke mentor. The award will be presented annually to a student veteran, serving military member, or a military family member enrolled at Syracuse University, who through their actions and aspirations embodies Coach Krzyzewski's public and demonstrated commitment to the virtues of honor, empathy, and servant-leadership. Uniformed Air Force and ROTC cadets, and student veterans, gave Coach Krzyzewski a plaque to commemorate the award.
Coach Boeheim presented Krzyzewski, his long-time colleague, with a special image of the two coaches printed on a piece of the old Carrier Dome roof. In addition to leading their college teams against each other, Boeheim was an assistant to Krzyzewski through three full Olympic Game cycles with USA Basketball. The Americans won three gold medals in that span.
Krzyzewski and Boeheim rank first and second, respectively in Division I coaching victories.
