Gait Makes His Debut
A new season kicks off for the Syracuse men's lacrosse team on Saturday against Holy Cross. Here's five things to know about the game.
1. Gait Era Begins – Fifth Head Coach in Program's 107 Years
As year 107 of the Syracuse men's lacrosse season kicks off against Holy Cross, Syracuse's fifth head coach officially takes the reigns. All-five coaches – Laurie Cox, Roy Simmons Sr., Roy Simmons Jr., John Desko, and now Gary Gait – are all in the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame. The prior four are in for their coaching success and contributions to the game. Gait for his incredible playing career that led him to be considered by many the greatest player of all-time.
Each of the last-three coaches – Desko, Simmons Jr. and Simmons Sr. – each rank in the top-20 of coaching victories.
2. Fans Return
As society returns towards normalcy, fans are allowed to return to Syracuse lacrosse games without capacity restrictions for the first time in 24 months. More than half of the Syracuse roster have not played a game with fans.
Season tickets are the best value for Orange fans this season. The entire home schedule is available for just $80. If individual game tickets, fans are encouraged to purchase in advance to save.

3. Orange in Openers
Syracuse is 82-20 in season openers in its previous 106 year history (there was no season in 1917 or during a three-year stretch for WWII).
Since the Dome opened (1981 season), Syracuse is 27-2 in season openers that have been played at home.
4. New Blood
For the first time since Syracuse had paid assistant coaches, more than 50-percent of the Syracuse coaching staff are from outside the program.
Aside from Gait, who carries the Orange history with him at the helm, Dave Pietramala (Johns Hopkins), Pat March (Roanoke) and TD Ierlan (Albany/Yale/Denver) played their college lacrosse elsewhere.
5. Lacrosse Legends Day
While there's palpable excitement about the Orange's season opener, that will only build for next week's matchup.
On Sunday, Feb. 20, Roy Simmons Jr. will be the sixth person enshrined in the Syracuse Athletics' Ring of Honor. Additionally, Gait will have his jersey retired and during the women's game vs. Stony Brook at 4 p.m., Katie Rowan will be the first women's lacrosse player to have her jersey retired.
