SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Syracuse University Athletics and The Brandr Group (TBG) have established a group licensing agreement for the University's student-athletes covering all the Orange's 20 teams. This partnership creates new opportunities for Syracuse University's student-athletes to profit off their Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) using the school's official trademarks and logos.
Â
"As one of the first college programs in the nation to develop co-licensing deals for student-athletes, we are excited to partner with BrandR which creates additional opportunities for our student-athletes in group licensing," said Syracuse Director of Athletics John Wildhack.
Â
The partnership with The Brandr Group allows for the collective use of student-athletes' NIL in licensing and marketing programs, co-branded with the Syracuse University logos and marks. Student-athletes will have the option to voluntarily join a group licensing program. TBG will facilitate group licensing opportunities on behalf of the student-athletes, and the program does not limit individual NIL rights.
Â
"Syracuse student-athletes are incredible, and we are so excited for them to be able to benefit from the combination of BrandR's group licensing efforts and Syracuse University's intellectual property," said Mark Wheeler, Syracuse Associate Athletics Director for Compliance. "This is another example of Syracuse University doing everything we can to create positive experiences and opportunities for our student-athletes and our partners."
Â
TBG, a brand management, marketing and licensing agency, will manage and administer the program as well as develop licensing opportunities on behalf of the student-athletes. With decades of collective management experience for some of the world's largest brands, TBG also manages the group rights program for the NFL, NBA and MLB players' associations in the college space.
Â
Products that combine team logos and player names and numbers have accounted for a large portion of licensed sports merchandise sales at the professional level for decades, and this program opens the door for the same opportunities for student-athletes at the collegiate level. Fans can expect to be able to purchase official Syracuse University merchandise, including team jerseys, with the name and number of their favorite Orange players who have joined the respective group licensing program once TBG enters into agreements with applicable school trademark licensees.
Â
"Syracuse University Athletics and its student-athletes have an incredible reputation throughout the entire country and will allow us to create meaningful opportunities for their student-athletes," said the Brandr Group CEO Wesley Haynes. "Group licensing opens up an entirely new and creative selection of sponsors, companies and promotional avenues with athletes from all sports and backgrounds utilizing their Name, Image and Likeness given school branding. This is the beginning of a fruitful and positive connection between Syracuse athletes and their fans."
Â
While no specific timeline is set, fans can soon expect to be able to purchase official Syracuse University merchandise, including team jerseys, with the name and number of their favorite players if the student-athletes have joined the respective group licensing program and as soon as TBG enters into agreements with applicable Syracuse University trademark licensees. Â
Â
"This partnership helps us continue to develop the best name, image, and likeness opportunities for Syracuse student-athletes, as well as for our fans who want to support students through the purchase of official Syracuse merchandise and digital assets, such as NFT's and video games, and much more to come," said Andrew T. Goodrich, Syracuse Deputy Director of Athletics/Chief Marketing Officer.
