Pietramala Honored With Tewaaraton Legends Award
4/10/2022 4:24:00 PM | Men's Lacrosse
Orange defensive coordinator Dave Pietramala will be presented with the Tewaaraton Legends Award, an honor presented to people whose performance during their college years would have earned them a Tewaaraton Award had the award existed when they played.
The Tewaaraton – the highest individual honor in lacrosse – has been awarded since just 2001. Pietramala will be the 10th recipient of the Tewaaraton Legends Award, which has been handed out annually since 2011.
Jim Brown (2011) and Brad Kotz (2015) are previous 'Cuse players who have received the honor.
Pietramala was a standout defenseman at Johns Hopkins and is widely considered one of the greatest defensemen in the history of the sport. A member of the US Lacrosse Hall of Fame, and only person to win a men's lacrosse NCAA DI Championship as both a player and a coach – he is also the only person to have been named national player of the year and national coach of the year in their lacrosse career.
At Hopkins, Petro won the 1987 NCAA title and was the winner of the William C. Schmeisser Award in 1988 and 1989 as the nation's top defensive player. He earned the Lt. Raymond J. Enners Award in 1989 as well, given annually to the nation's most outstanding defensive player.
Pietramala is now in his first year on Gary Gait's staff at Syracuse. Gait, a first-year head coach on the men's side, is widely considered the greatest offensive player in lacrosse history and likely a candidate to win the Tewaaraton Legends Award in the future as well.
