5 Things to Know: Syracuse vs. Virginia
4/20/2022 10:30:00 AM | Men's Lacrosse
Syracuse hosts No. 5 Virginia for the first of two final home games to end the 2022 season on Saturday at 4 p.m. Here's five things to know about the matchup:
1. REPEAT OPPONENTS
Syracuse will get a second chance against Virginia (and Notre Dame next week) as the Orange play both twice this season.
The ACC did away with the conference tournament last season and replaced it with a six-game regular season for conference play. That has resulted in 'Cuse facing both opponents twice in the regular season each of the past two seasons. Regardless, 'Cuse and UVA have typically found a way to meet multiple times in a season – typically due to postseason matchups.
The Orange and Cavaliers have played twice in: 2022, 2021, 2018, 2008, 2006, 2002, 1999, 1998 and 1995.
2. LIKE FATHER, LIKE SON
Orange middie Brendan Curry enters Saturday's game with 90 career goals, tied for the eighth most in program history by an SU midfielder.
Already in rare company, six of the seven players ahead of him are currently in the US Lacrosse Hall of Fame – but he currently isn't the leader in his own household. His father, Todd, is three goals ahead of him (93).
Head Coach Gary Gait (192) is well above the rest of the field by more than 60 goals, but two strong scoring games from Curry down the stretch could have him finish as high as fifth on the program's midfield scoring list. Todd Curry (93), Jamie Trimboli (95) and Charlie Lockwood (97) are potentially within reach. Roy Colsey (124), Paul Gait (127) and Brad Kotz (129) make up the rest of the list behind Gait.
3. DORDEVIC CLIMBING
Redshirt-junior Tucker Dordevic now has 42 goals on the season after another three-goal output against North Carolina. At 3.5 goals per game this season, he's on pace to finish the season with 49 goals.
His 42 goals are already the most in a season since Dylan Donahue scored 50 in 2015. Another hat trick would get him to 45 and into 17th in a season in SU history. 49 (his current pace) moves him into a tie for eighth and would be tied for the second-most goals scored in over 30 years. Of the players in the top-10, only Tom Abbott (55/1977) and Matt Riter (49/1993) would have played less than 15 games (14 each).
4. PHAUP IS IRON MAN
Jakob Phaup enters Saturday's game having taken 330-straight faceoffs for the Orange, which is the most consecutive draws taken in program history. His 330-straight alone would rank 11th-most in program history. Factoring in the 18 in the season opener before he was lifted (the only game anyone else has taken a faceoff this season) he enters Saturday's game ninth on the program's single-season faceoff attempts list – 45 away from the program record.
His next win (203) will move him into ninth in program history for single-season faceoff wins. Bill Dirrigl (274) has the program record.
5. KIDS WELCOME
