Seniors Silas Derfel and Jenna Tivnan will receive the Student-Athlete Award at the Syracuse One University Awards Ceremony on Friday, April 22, in an event held at Hendricks Chapel.
Derfel, a health and exercise science major in the Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics, earned the honor for producing the highest cumulative grade-point-average among senior male student-athletes this year at Syracuse. A member of the cross county and track and field teams, Derfel ran in the 2021 ACC Championship in which the Orange placed second behind Notre Dame. He's competed in the 300, 400, 1,500 and 3,000 meters during the track campaign.
Tivnan is a sport management major in the Falk College and has accumulated the best cumulative grade-point-average among senior female student-athletes this year. A mainstay on the women's soccer team since her arrival at Syracuse, Tivnan served as a captain on the 2021 squad. She was named to the 2021 Fall Academic All-District Team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Tivnan has earned a spot on the Syracuse Athletic Director's Honor Roll (3.0-or-better grade-point average) in each of her previous seven semesters.
The 2022 One University Award Ceremony is scheduled to began at 4:00 p.m. Two major awards -- the Chancellor's Medal and the Chancellor's Citation for Excellence -- will be bestowed. The ceremony will also include the presentation of the Student-Athlete Award, Judith Seinfeld Scholarship, Meredith Professorship for Teaching Excellence, Teaching Recognition Award, Diversity and Inclusion Award, Tolley Medal and Chancellor's Forever Orange Award, and the recognition of emeriti faculty and employees who celebrated milestone anniversaries in 2021.
The University Scholars, Senior Class and School and College Marshals, and Remembrance and Lockerbie Scholars will also be honored.
