5 Things to Know: Syracuse vs. Notre Dame
4/28/2022 9:06:00 AM | Men's Lacrosse
Syracuse hosts Notre Dame on Sunday at Noon in the season finale. Here are five storylines ahead of the matchup:
1. Senior Sendoff
Twenty-two members of the Syracuse men's lacrosse program will be honored prior to Sunday's game. As is tradition, players typically walk with their class on senior day. Due to additional COVID eligibility waivers and redshirts and past senior day cancellations, this year's senior day will feature all fourth, fifth and six year players in the program, even though some may have remaining eligibility.
The ceremony will take place prior to the game, so fans are encouraged to arrive early to salute the seniors.
Basil Aburn, Mikey Berkman, Brett Barlow, Jacob Buttermore, Griffin Cook, Brendan Curry, Nick DiPietro, Tucker Dordevic, Nick Hapney, Cole Horan, Shahé Katchadurian, Brett Kennedy, Jack Kennedy, Matt Magnan, Grant Murphy, Dami Oladunmoye, Jakob Phaup, Lucas Quinn, Owen Seebold and Jerry Staats are the 20 players who'll partake, plus senior manager Will Findlay and Team IMPACT teammate Gaven Bort.
2. Notre Dame x2
This will be the Orange's second-straight year playing Notre Dame as a home-and-home series as part of the ACC's six-game unbalanced regular season schedule. The Orange lose the earlier season matchup at Arlotta and were swept last season in the series as well.
While 'Cuse holds the all-time series advantage 10-7, the Irish have won four straight.
3. Like Father, Like Son
Brendan Curry will walk on the field pregame with his father as the family's all-time leading scorer, with a high probability that he leaves the field overtaking the title.
Brendan (92 goals) enters Sunday's game as the eighth-leading scorer out of the midfield in program history. His father, Todd, is seventh with 93 career goals. A hat trick would move Curry into a tie for sixth with former teammate Jamie Trimboli, and he's five goals behind Charlie Lockwood (97) for fifth.
4. Phaup Takes Them All
Jakob Phaup has taken 369-straight faceoffs for Syracuse, the longest streak of consecutive draws taken in program history.
He enters the game with the sixth most (223) faceoff wins and second-most attempts (387) in a single season. His seventh attempt on Sunday will pass Bill Dirrigl (393/1988) for the single-season record. He could also potentially climb the wins list with Ben Williams (232/2016) and Chris Cercy (245/2001) both within 20. Dirrigl also has the single-season record at 274 faceoff wins in 1988.
Phaup's 966 career attempts is second to Williams (1,089), and his 568 career wins is third behind Cercy (622) and Williams (669). His 109 GBs is fifth, two behind Williams (111/2016) for fifth in a season.
5. Dordevic Climbing Goals List
Tucker Dordevic has 45 goals on the season, which is currently tied for 18th on the single-season list. The list is very tightly packed though. Four more goals this year (which would be slightly below his season average) would finish the 14 game regular season eighth (49). It would also be tied for the fewest games played by any of the players in the top-10.
