
Root Is Syracuse Nominee For NCAA Woman Of The Year

Recent Syracuse graduate Meghan Root, a four-year letter winner with the women's soccer program, is the school's nominee for the 2022 NCAA Woman of the Year Award. Root is one of 248 Division I student-athletes who have been nominated.
This year marks the 32nd year of the NCAA Woman of the Year Award program. The award is based on four pillars: academics, athletics, service and leadership.The 2022 process features 577 nominees from the three NCAA Divisions and 125 multi-sport athletes.
Root earned a $10,000 Jim McKay Scholarship, awarded by the NCAA to college athletes who demonstrate achievement in sports communications or public relations or hope to contribute to the field. She was named to the 2021 College Sports Information Directors of America Academic All-District 1 Team.
A three-year starter, Root finished her Orange career with 21 points in 59 career games. She was named to the All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Team three times, the Syracuse Athletic Director's Honor Roll every semester and earned the 2022 Weaver-James-Corrigan-Swofford Postgraduate Scholarship Award, which honors ACC students pursuing postgraduate studies based on academic performance, athletic distinction, and community involvement.
She was presented with the 2021-22 Doris Saladay Award, the highest honor presented annually to one female and one male student-athlete at Syracuse. It recognizes accomplishments in athletic competition, academics, leadership and community engagement. Root graduated in the spring with a degree in public relations.
A native of Arcade, N.Y., Root interned with the Special Olympics and the Syracuse University Athletic Communications Department.
