Camp Notebook: Week 3
8/21/2022 10:49:00 AM | Football
It's now inside of two weeks until Syracuse hosts Louisville in the JMA Wireless Dome.
Tickets for the entirety of the Orange's much-anticipated home slate are available on Cuse.com/Tickets. Fans can also purchase partial plans, group tickets and individual game tickets as well for the most challenging home schedule in recent memory as five of the seven opponents are receiving votes in the Preseason Coaches Poll, including three top-20 foes.
The third week of training camp came to a close on Saturday with the second of two intra-squad scrimmages. The Orange ran 119 plays in little more than an hour and a half on the Schwartzwalder and Katz practice fields. As 'Cuse Camp draws closer to conclusion, catch up on some of the things you missed this week.
Monday, Aug. 15
The Orange returned to the practice field after one of their NCAA mandated off days on Sunday. The third week of camp kicked off with the squad in shells:
Tuesday, Aug. 16
Head Coach Dino Babers met with the media for his weekly press conference. Babers provided some personnel updates and talked about what he's looking to see over the final practices before game week.
Wednesday, Aug. 17
Preparation continued on Wednesday, with one of the day's highlights being a hotly competitive 1-on-1 period. As is typical, an early period in practice featured offensive vs. defensive line, linebackers vs. running backs and wide receivers vs. defensive backs in various 1-on-1 drills.
While the wideout group made a number of eye-catching plays, the day's highlight came from freshman defensive back Jeremiah Wilson
After practice it was offensive players who were available to the media. Hear what QB Garrett Shrader and LT Matthew Bergeron had to say:

Thursday, Aug. 18
The Orange were off on Thursday. Syracuse was approved to start training camp two days earlier than prior seasons, but the NCAA practice date allotment prior to the first game remains. Therefore, Aug. 18 and Thursday, Aug. 25 are additional off days from practice in this year's calendar in addition to the typical Sunday off days.
The coaching staff added an additional surprise on Thursday though, canceling some of the afternoon meetings and renting out a local theater for a movie day. The day allowed players to get off their feet in the middle of training camp and continue to bond together prior to the 2022 season officially opening.
Friday, Aug. 19
'Cuse returned to the practice field on Friday and defensive players were available to the media after practice.
LeQuint Allen's hail mary catch at the end of a two-minute drill period provided the day's highlight:

The Orange's second scrimmage of the preseason ran much like the first. It was 'live' for much of the action, except for portions where the 'ones' competed.
This scrimmage focused much on situational play. Coach Babers varied spots on drive starts, from red zone to being backed up in their own end zone for the offense. There were also time and score situations, giving the offense limited time on the clock, a score and a set number of timeouts, plus four-minute drill situations, where the offense needed to run time off the clock and the defense needed to get a stop. Saturday's festivities ran much like an actual game would, which is fitting for the final scrimmage of the preseason.
Other Notes:
- The Associated Press released its preseason poll on Monday. The Orange are scheduled to play No. 4 Clemson, No. 5 Notre Dame, No. 13 NC State, No. 17 Pitt, No. 22 Wake Forest, and Purdue, who is receiving votes this season. Three of those contests will come at home, adding even more value to a season ticket this season: Cuse.com/Tickets
- ESPN released its top-100 players in college football list for this season. Star running back Sean Tucker checked in at No. 15, which was the second-highest rank among ACC players.
- Orange legend Joe Morris was selected as a member of this year's Giants Ring of Honor class.
- Eric Mac Lain of ACC Network has been releasing his positional rankings all preseason, which have featured plenty of Orange. The analyst tabbed Syracuse's defense as the third-best unit in the ACC heading into this season.
- The ACC Digital Network is also counting down the top-25 ACC players in the 25 days prior to the preseason. Star linebacker Mikel Jones checked in at No. 17 on the list this week.
