Girard’s 28 Points Secure Victory at Georgia Tech

Joseph Girard III led all scorers with 28 points in Syracuse's (13-7, 6-3), 80-63, defeat of Georgia Tech (8-11, 1-8) on Saturday afternoon. Eighteen of Girards' 28 points came in the first half of action.
A season-best six three-pointers composed over half of Girard's 28-point effort. He added a season-high seven assists. Maliq Brown contributed personal-bests of 18 points and four steals. Jesse Edwards (14 points) and Judah Mintz (13 points) rounded out the four Orange Performers who scored in double-digits.
HOW THE GAME WAS DECIDED
After falling behind by 11, 21-10, in the early going, the Orange responded with a 16-4 run that pushed Syracuse ahead, 26-25. Girard had 10 puts in the turnaround and the Orange did not trail again.
ORANGE TAKE CONTROL IN THE FLATS
Midway through the first frame, Syracuse took control of the contest by collecting 17 unanswered points. Girard led with 13 points, including a trio of 3-pointers. Symir Torrence started the run with a layup and Maliq Brown added a dunk before Girard nailed his third 3-ball in the stretch. The 'Cuse held a 33-25 advantage with 6:20 remaining before halftime.
Judah Mintz recorded five of his seven first-half points in the last four minutes of the opening half. Brown added on a layup with 16 ticks left to round out SU's last seven points of the first period.
Syracuse entered the break with a 40-33 edge against Georgia Tech.
GEORGIA TECH RESURGENCE
A layup from Deivon Smith and a 3-pointer by Kyle Sturdivant cut SU's lead to six points. Quadir Copeland scored his first layup of the night before Myles Kelly connected from beyond the arc, narrowing the Orange's lead to five, 59-54 with exactly nine minutes left in the matchup.
ORANGE CLOSEOUT
With Syracuse holding a 63-57 advantage with 7:15 left, the Orange used two baskets from Brown sandwiched around an Edwards layup to move the lead back up to a comfortable 12 points. The margin reached as many as 17 before the contest ended.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
The Orange return home on Tuesday, Jan. 24, as they host North Carolina inside the JMA Wireless Dome. Tip-off is slated for 9:00 p.m. and the game will air live on ESPN.
