SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse University volleyball had redshirt sophomore Raina Hughes achieve a career-high 15 kills in a 3-1 loss to Florida State on Friday night (25-10, 24-26, 25-13, 25-15). Freshmen Greta Schlichter and Veronica Sierzant combined for six service aces, each accruing three.
"We wanted to come out at home and make the most out of our last four matches," said head coach Bakeer Ganesharatnam. "We wanted to use these matches as a platform to create a foundation for us to build on. The process is not easy, but I have to give the team a compliment for staying in it, listening to the coaches and fighting for ourselves. I'm really proud of the way we represented ourselves today and the way the team competed against a top team in Florida State."
'Cuse kept pace with Florida State to start the first set, trailing by two points, 7-5. The Seminoles went on an 11-point run to put the frame out of reach, going on to win set one, 25-10. The second frame saw fight from the Orange as they took an early lead in the set, 6-3, capped off by an ace from sophomore Melina Brooking. Florida State retaliated with a 10-1 run that took the lead, 15-9. After some back-and-forth play brought the Seminole lead to 22-16, 'Cuse went on seven-point run including three aces from Sierzant to take back the lead, 23-22. The Orange finished the set with a three-point run to win the frame, 26-24.
